With so many posts and headlines about minimizing and paring homes down piece by piece, it’s refreshing to see a home like Brooke’s. As a self-proclaimed “caretaker of dead people’s things,” Brooke’s home has no shortage of stuff. But it’s hard to come across a single item that doesn’t have a story behind it. Each room is filled with meaningful art, collected trinkets, and keepsakes passed down from previous generations.

Brooke and her blended family live in this 1858 home that was once owned by the local railway in the 1920s, which allowed guests to spend the night upstairs before their train departed in the morning. That’s not where the history ends though. The couple has chosen to pack their home full of personal items that are both sentimental and fun for visitors to view—from custom artwork throughout the house to a portrait of Brooke’s mother taking up nearly an entire wall of their living room.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Playful.

Inspiration: I’m most inspired by working in all the items I have inherited. I’m a caretaker of dead people’s things.

Favorite Element: The screened-in porch

Biggest Challenge: Fitting six of us in here!

What Friends Say: A friend once described it as “designed for entertaining.”

Biggest Embarrassment: Some of the curtains came with the house…

Proudest DIY: There’s a few, but probably the chalkboard wall.

Best Advice: “Bravery is rewarded.” That could be used in design, right?

Dream Sources: Living Etc. Magazine. Thank God I can’t get my hands on most of the items in it.

Thanks, Brooke!
