A Plain Attic Guest Bedroom Is Now a “Little Jewel Box” After a Colorful Redo

The team also had an added challenge of designing a shared guest room and workspace with an awkward layout. However, Jessica treated “the sloped ceilings as a canvas for a bold floral pattern rather than a limitation,” she notes. 

Because Jessica knew her clients craved color and warmth in the space, the team immediately “wanted to wrap the room in wallpaper for a cozy and unexpected surprise,” Jessica says. They chose to add a French floral wallpaper on half of the room — specifically the half where the guest bed would be located. And paint the other half Benjamin Moore’s “Boothbay Gray” — creating a calm and refreshing work area where the desk would go. 

The wallpaper was also a “great jumping-off point” for Jessica and the team because of its bold pattern and warm colors.

Jessica describes the room as “small but mighty” because the new design packed the space with several exciting textile moments. Mira Jean Designs’ in-house workroom created a custom curved headboard upholstered with a woven emerald fabric from Thibaut Design. 

Plus, a velvet bench in “Celadon” green, a custom throw pillow in a tan yellow fabric, and white Quince sheets with a blue scalloped edge completed the cozy guest bed. The team also selected a navy blue upholstered chair for the desk and used the same fabric from the pillow to create a balloon Roman window shade. 

“Your eye is happy moving from one end of the room to the other,” Jessica adds about the numerous patterns and fabrics in the space.

But to balance the splurges of the custom textile projects and the floral wallpaper, Jessica decided to save in other areas. The team left the original doorknobs and hardware and didn’t relocate electrical. Instead, they worked with the existing outlet placements, or lack thereof, and used a cordless table lamp on one of the nightstands. 

But regardless of the lack of electrical and the awkward layout, the client was still “overjoyed with the end result,” Jessica comments. The guest room quickly became “whimsical and inviting” for anyone staying over. 

Jessica shares that the client felt that the new room was “warm and cheerful — and the perfect welcome for future guests.” But mainly, Mira Jean Designs believes that this “little jewel box of a guest bedroom retreat” transformation is “proof that wallpaper can make all the difference.”
