When Marcella DiLonardo, an author, recipe developer, content creator, and founder of the blog Modest Marce, originally toured her current home with her partner, Justin Jones, the pair were attracted to the space for several reasons.

“We fell in love with the character of the house and all the modern updates that were completed,” DiLonardo writes of the 1928 home they share with their three dogs, Buddy Holly, Pete, and Gigi. “It was the perfect blend of old and new!”

The initial renovations to the three-bedroom house in the Niagara region of Ontario helped the couple envision the stamp they’d eventually put on the space. “Although the design at the time was very plain, it was the perfect blank canvas for me to get creative without having to worry about a major renovation,” DiLonardo says.

But what was once a “blank canvas” is now a colorful home filled with nine wallpapers and American and Scandinavian mid-century modern design influences. The home’s stunning design is both aesthetically pleasing and functional, though.

DiLonardo, the author of the cookbook, Bake the Seasons, says that because she works from home, she has to keep her work top of mind when designing a space. She takes product and lifestyle photos outside recipe development, so having a stunning background is necessary.

“Each room has been used as a photo backdrop in one way or another,” DiLonardo shares. “The kitchen doubles as a filming space, and the studio addition has provided all the natural light one could ever need.”
