The year was 2022 and cocktail and lifestyle content creator behind Taste & Tipple Yvonne Langen and her partner, Michael Rizk, had outgrown their 600-square-foot condo. She “wanted to move into a slightly larger space that could accommodate my ever-expanding collection of spirits and vintage barware,” and says she “stumbled across the house while trawling realtor.ca in February.” Unfortunately, it was out of their budget.

"The biggest rule I’ve broken is the idea that you should style your home for resale value and paint everything out in white and grey," Yvonne explains. "I can’t imagine anything more nonsensical than designing your home for someone else. I have used so many different colors throughout my home because I want it to be as colorful and multifaceted as my life."

The price wasn’t a fit, but Yvonne didn’t completely forget about the property. In fact, when she noticed that the house was still on the market six months later and the price had been reduced, she called her Realtor to book a walk-through. “I immediately fell in love with the 1940s-era architectural details like the arched doorways, custom built-ins, and wood-burning fireplaces.”

The gold-colored pillows are Article's “Lucca Yellow Gold Pillow Set.”

But while the size of the house and the architectural charm was incredibly appealing, the house wasn’t exactly move-in ready. “Not one to shy away from a renovation project, I was undaunted by the amount of work that would be required to make the home our own,” Yvonne writes. “Luckily, Michael is incredibly talented at construction and has a tenacious can-do attitude. Read: He indulges my many outlandish design ideas and brings them to life.”

What do you think is the trendiest color this year? "I’ve seen a lot of content about 'unexpected red theory' online and so I would say red, specifically a high gloss, lacquered red is the trendiest color of the moment."

There’s hardly a room in the house that hasn’t gotten an update thanks to the couple. “ Over the course of the past 20 months (and counting), we have renovated or redecorated every room in the house, except for the primary bathroom, which is our next project.” The primary bedroom came with a dark and too-narrow closet, so they did a little wall rearranging as well as secondhand IKEA Pax wardrobes to make the kind of closet dreams are made of.

The curtains are the “Smoked Mauve Organic Cotton Velvet Window Curtain Panel” from CB2 and the
Johanna Tiebacks are from Anthropologie.

They moved a wall and a doorway to improve the entryway, also tiling the floor all the way to the living room. The powder room got a facelift with a chartreuse paint color and Graham & Brown’s Edo Toile wallpaper in Navy.

"I recruited the help of my friend Melanie Neault, founder of interior design firm Launch Your Space, to validate my design ideas, push me farther or rein me in where appropriate, and help me source fixtures and furnishings that I wasn’t able to decide on after weeks of internet sleuthing."

But Yvonne says the kitchen has been the “largest undertaking thus far. We ripped out all the mottled brown faux-marble look ceramic tile and replaced them with a black-and-white checkerboard tile floor with intricate borders. We did all the work ourselves; ripping out and replacing the kitchen floor was a 10-day project unto itself.” They painted the existing cabinets but updated hardware, replaced the countertop, switched out the sink, and installed a gorgeous tile for the backsplash.
