Costco’s Now Selling an Entire Garage, and Shoppers Say It’s Actually a Good Deal
If reports are any indication, tiny house life is here to stay. According to a 2020 study conducted by Fidelity National, over half of the 2,000 respondents said they would live in a tiny home. But even if you’re not willing to do tiny house life, browsing the internet for accessory dwelling units (ADUs), tiny homes, or even pop-up garages might feel like a meaningful home improvement project that can increase your storage or even your home value.
Brands have noticed — Amazon sells tiny homes on their website, and, in fact, finding the perfect shippable storage shed or tiny home or even garage (!) can be as easy as using your Costco membership. Case in point: Costco is selling a roomy 12” x 24” wood shed that could transform your backyard storage, or be used as a full-on garage.
According to Costco’s website, the Yardline Upton wood shed (which can be DIY or professionally installed) comes equipped with 96-inch extra-wide double doors and a 48-inch-wide service door, so you won’t have to worry about not being able to fit all of your essentials inside of it. It also features a 4-foot-deep overhead storage loft, which makes for extra storage, five windows (3 operable, and 2 fixed) and customizable door and window placement. To get more information on the Yardline special sale, you can go to their website and insert your zip code to see if the offer is available to you — and to get more information on the assembly of the garage itself.
The Yardline shed’s cost depends on a variety of factors. The shed ranges in price from $6,500 for one without a floor and without installation included to $12,999 with a floor and installation included. Plus, depending on the state and zip code you live in, curbside delivery is included (not every state qualifies for curbside delivery and installation, and apparently some zip codes in the state of Florida can’t purchase the item due to state weather restrictions).
Although the product information says that you won’t need a saw and the wood comes pre-cut, some commenters said that the pre-cut lumber wasn’t exactly perfect, so they had to break out their saw a few times. The shed also comes with wall vents and treated siding to help protect against “rot, decay, and insects.” The garage has a maximum wind resistance of 115 miles per hour and a limited 15-year-warranty.
You will need to prep a foundation for the shed — either a concrete pad, wood runners, or gravel foundation. Plus, you’ll want to make sure that you measure the dimensions of the doors of the shed, and if you want to store a car in it, your car’s height to make sure it’ll fit under the height of the double doors (7 feet tall) and that the width of the doors will also accommodate your car (96 inches).
“Excellent building at a very fair price,” one five-star Costco reviewer wrote about the shed. “Totally pleased with my purchase and the installation. I actually looked into building a similar storeroom with a local contractor. His preliminary estimate was six times the cost of this shed and we didn’t even get into time of construction.”
“I bought it with a little doubt [that] it would be what I needed, but the end result was surprising: It is a great space with many options about how you can use it,” another shopper said. “The quality is very good, [and] you receive a lot of value for your money … building it in 12 hours, the final result left me satisfied.”
If you can’t get the shed delivered to you in the state you live in, The Home Depot is selling a wooden garage kit without a floor with the same 12’ x 24’ dimensions for about $5,232 on sale. The garage kit has a door opening large enough to store “a single car, small truck, or SUV,” (but definitely measure before you park inside!) and requires you buy the shingles, felt paper, drip edge, and paint separately. Although the garage kit is sold as a DIY product, you could hire a contractor to help you build it if you wanted. Similar to the Costco garage, it also has windows and you will also need to ensure a solid foundation for this garage kit.
