One of the only things I don’t love about living in the city is the lack of outdoor space. New York has some gorgeous parks, but it’s just not the same as having a garden of my own to tend to. So I do my best to bring the outside in with houseplants and flower arrangements, and I get my true gardening “fix” by accompanying my parents to pick out new plants for their home on Cape Cod every summer.

Recently, though, I stumbled upon one of my all-time favorite plants in a very unexpected place. While perusing the aisles of Costco for a new trash can and some outdoor furniture, I spotted the pink and blue display of my dreams: potted Hydrangeas, and for only $21.99!

I grew up on Cape Cod, so hydrangeas are *kinda* my jam. I could (and often do) spend hours at my local garden center checking out all of the varieties — from conical to spherical, shrubs to trees, pink to blue, and everything in between. And although they can cost a pretty penny, they’re also pretty resilient plants. If you treat them right, you’ll be enjoying their beautiful blooms for years to come.

These Costco florals won’t break the bank, though. And although in my experience hydrangeas tend to fare best when planted outdoors, these pint-size potted beauties can actually be kept indoors! Some decent sunlight and attentive watering will at least keep your potted hydrangea blooming throughout the summer.

Personally I love the pink shades, but blue is certainly a classic look. You really can’t go wrong — especially not at this price point!

We all know Costco changes up their inventory pretty often, so don’t wait too long to go and grab your little slice of spring. Trust me — it’s worth it. I’m always shocked by just how much a few colorful blooms can make my space feel refreshed and ready for a new season.

If you’re not a Costco member yet, there are other ways to snag a potted hydrangea for cheap this spring. Target also carries these adorable potted plants as part of its Good Little Garden collection, in four colorways: blue, pink, red (more of a hot pink), and white. Plus, they come in the most adorable little patterned pots! And they cost just $15. Currently these cuties are only available in-store, but you can order them online in advance for in-store pickup.

Whether you’re an aspiring apartment gardener or a full-fledged horticulturalist, you seriously can’t go wrong with hydrangeas. And now is the best time to buy them — either for a sprinkle of spring indoors, or to plant as a new garden addition for summer. So on your next Costco run, add a bit of whimsy to your cart: Consider taking home one of these leafy beauties alongside your trash can and your toilet paper!
