This Tiny Apartment Needed a Very Specific Sofa — And This Shape Was a “Godsend”

I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

When Austin Larkin was looking for a couch for his 240-square-foot New York City apartment, he wasn’t browsing through unlimited options. In fact, it was quite the opposite experience. Most sofas were simply too big for his small space. “I was working with very specific parameters, so I had to find something that was 60 inches, which was not easy to do,” he admits in the video above.

It wasn’t just the size that Austin couldn’t compromise on, but also the color. The apartment’s two main focal colors are burnt orange and green (specifically, Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green). In such a small space, a large piece in the wrong color would seem seriously out of place. Eventually, he found one on All Modern.

“This particular sofa was a godsend; it was the exact shade of orange that I needed, too, which was very important as well,” Austin explains.

Unfortunately, the sofa that Austin selected isn’t available anymore. But if you’re looking for a similar option, I’ve scoured the web for you to make shopping easier. The key is looking for the same tiny-apartment-friendly formula that worked for Austin: a curved silhouette, a compact frame, and a color that actually adds to the room’s style. Keep reading to see alternatives.

The Best Small-Space Sofas Are Curved and Under 60 Inches

As I mentioned before, Austin didn’t have the largest amount of square footage to work with. Incredibly, the only other room besides his bedroom serves as a kitchen, a bathroom (the shower is in the middle of the room), a living area, and a closet. So, the furniture needed to flow and help make the room feel larger. That’s why the curved shape works so well; it feels more free-flowing and less structured, which leads to a more relaxed, spacious feel.

At the time of the House Tour, Austin described his apartment’s style as “colorful and retro; eclectic groovy maximalism.” The couch he chose checks all of those boxes. While the exact model isn’t available anymore, there’s a similar-looking piece available at All Modern — the only catch is it comes in a bouclé (rather than velvet) texture. It might only come in cream white and gray, but the dotted texture adds an eye-catching element to the sofa. Another bonus? It’s only 52.8 inches long, which is ideal for small spaces

If you’re looking for a similar couch with a bit of color, look no further than Wayfair. There’s a 50-inch curved sofa that comes in (coincidentally) orange sherpa and green performance bouclé. Originally, there were eight color and texture options available, but most are sold out, given how popular the find is. While writing this article, 175 individual shoppers have given the sofa a five-star rating.

Visually engaging couches, like the celebrity-approved curved sofas above, add pizzazz to a small home without taking up too much floor space. Plus, they don’t have to break the bank. If you’re looking for a new item for your studio apartment, consider the previous finds.

This isn’t the only cool home featured in the video above. Check out all the House Tours highlighted below.
