Laundry room with a washer and dryer, hanging clothes, detergent, and a storage cubby.

When a room is the most used space in your home, but it’s not working for you, it’s time to make a change. Take it from Crystal Ransons, a DIY influencer who’s transforming her family’s builder-grade house into a custom home.

The family moved into their 2000’s builder-grade house in 2017, and they’ve been slowly adding character and personality “to make it stand out from the rest of the homes in the neighborhood,” Crystal shares.

A Lot of Time Was Spent in the Laundry Room

“[The laundry room] was and still is one of the most used spaces in the house, so making it functional and a place that I want to spend time was very important,” Crystal explains. As a mother to three young children, the laundry room is a constant in Crystal and her husband’s daily lives — but the builder-grade setup wasn’t keeping up.

A Family of 5 Needed Way More Storage

“I needed storage — this house has one linen closet and one utility closet, so creating storage was a must,” Crystal says. And for a family of five, those two closets weren’t enough.

The room simply didn’t work for the family. Plus, it had one “horrid wire rack-style shelf” that caused more problems for the space’s functionality than it helped with its organization. So instead, Crystal’s husband built custom cabinets that made the small room work much harder.

They originally put a pull-out clothing rack in a cabinet, so they could air-dry items and then hide it when not in use. But Crystal recently moved it over the washer and dryer because they use it every day, and there was no need to hide it.

While the family has a ton of storage now in their laundry room, Crystal still shares that she would add more storage above their washer and dryer — rather than the shelf they made — if she were to redo the space today.

A Few Later Changes Made the Laundry Room Work Even Better

While a few changes happened after Crystal and her husband “finished” the laundry room, the space is still a moment of joy in their home.

For instance, Crystal eventually switched the location of the expandable clothing rack, and later upgraded the appliances to front-loading machines. The new machines meant that Crystal could add a unique wooden counter to the top surface, creating more surface area and storage space.

However, Crystal’s favorite part is still the cabinets because they helped make the room feel custom and create a little happiness boost whenever she enters the room.
