Kitchens have always been the heart of the home, but their design is evolving in some exciting ways as 2025 approaches. For years, all-white and gray cabinets dominated the scene — particularly when it came to selling and buying homes. Buyers, so the wisdom goes, want to see neutral spaces that they can imagine putting their own stamp on and that appeal to the widest group of potential future homeowners as possible, too.

But that era seems to be fading. Instead, a richer, warmer palette is taking center stage, and experts predict that 2025 will be all about cabinets with personality and depth. These trends are about more than just color — they reflect a growing desire for kitchens that feel personal, welcoming, and timeless.

A Warm and Bold Palette Takes Center Stage

“In 2025, we can expect to see a surge of rich shades like browns, plums, and deep reds making their way into kitchen cabinetry,” says Kristin Harrison, Founder & Principal Designer of Bungalow 10 Interiors. “This shift reflects a move away from the all-white cabinets, bringing warmth, character, and a touch of sophistication to the heart of the home.”

These bold tones create a cozy yet polished vibe. They’re perfect for homeowners who want a kitchen that feels more personal, who are stepping away from sterile neutrals that sometimes make spaces feel too clinical. Pairing these rich hues with aged nickel or brass hardware adds even more character and a timeless touch. Plus, they’re right on-trend — Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year is a gorgeous brown called Mocha Mousse.

Goodbye, Minimalism; Hello, Texture and Character

According to Harrison, the shift toward natural materials and layered textures pairs perfectly with the ongoing love for natural stone and organic finishes.

“People are shifting away from whites and grays, embracing bold, deeper-toned cabinets paired with stunning natural stone countertops,” she says. “This combination infuses personality and depth into one of the most-used spaces in your home. Incorporating natural materials and textures creates a sense of timeless elegance that never goes out of style.”

This move away from ultra-minimalism means that kitchens will feel more lived-in and full of life (think: warm wood accents, veined marble countertops, and a vibe that invites you to linger and enjoy the space).

The Rise of Unconventional Colors

While rich browns and plums are making their mark, other unexpected colors are starting to shine in kitchen design. Deep reds, muted greens, and even earthy ochres are gaining traction as homeowners look for ways to break free from traditional palettes and express themselves.

“With the design world shifting from ultra-minimalism, homeowners are embracing the opportunity to infuse their kitchens with personal style while maintaining a timeless, sophisticated appeal,” Harrison says.

These unconventional hues allow for creativity and individuality while still feeling classic. They work beautifully with both modern and traditional design elements, making them versatile options for a wide range of styles.

Sustainability and Craftsmanship Are Key

Another driving force behind 2025’s cabinet trends is the focus on sustainability and quality. Homebuyers are seeking out eco-friendly paints and reclaimed materials, which pull double duty aligning with environmental values and also adding authenticity and character to their spaces.

Hardware trends are also shifting. While brass remains a go-to option, aged nickel and other more subdued finishes are growing in popularity.

“In terms of kitchen cabinet hardware, I think we are going to see a resurgence of nickels, but more of an aged/worn look,” Harrison explains. “Brass will always be classic, but I have noticed a trend away from it being picked for everything.”

These thoughtful details elevate the overall look, proving that small touches can have a big impact when it comes to creating a kitchen that feels both functional and beautiful.

How to Bring These Trends into Your Kitchen

If you’re planning a kitchen renovation or if you simply want to refresh your cabinets before you put your home on the market, these emerging color trends are a great place to start. Deep tones like plum or brown pair beautifully with light, natural stone countertops, while bold reds or muted greens can add vibrancy to neutral surroundings.

When incorporating these colors, think about balance. A full kitchen of deep cabinets might feel heavy, but pairing them with lighter finishes, open shelving, or a colorful island can keep the space feeling dynamic. Mixing materials and textures — like matte cabinet finishes with polished hardware or textured stone — also adds interest and depth.

“These trends are about more than just aesthetics,” Harrison says. “They’re about creating spaces that feel lived-in and full of character. Kitchens should inspire creativity, bring people together, and, most importantly, feel like home.”
