Move Over, Wood — Designers Are Embracing Cork in 2026 (See How!)
I’m always looking to see what new and unexpected textures, colors, and materials are popping up in interiors these days — bonus points for those that look great and have an actual practical use, too. So when I started to see cork decor on my feeds earlier this month, I was instantly obsessed. And this trend is a lot more approachable than you might think.
I’ve seen cork used in design before, of course, most often as flooring. Cork flooring can be a controversial choice, as it isn’t the easiest material to maintain and can stain fairly easily. But cork does provide a unique look and texture, as well as great sound absorption and heat insulation. The material is naturally lightweight and buoyant, too, making it pretty easy to install and comfortable underfoot. Lately, however, I’ve noticed cork is moving beyond the floors and onto walls, ceilings, and even furniture.
Why Are Designers Loving Cork Right Now?
Wherever you use it, the natural texture and color of cork floors can add a warm, casual feel to a space. It’s also an extremely sustainable material; cork is a type of tree bark, and as a “rapidly-renewable resource,” according to flooring manufacturer WE Cork, it can be harvested without harming the tree at all. This also makes it a fairly affordable option for large-scale applications such as wainscoting, wall paneling, etc. Combined with its unique aesthetic appeal, it’s no wonder designers are starting to experiment more with the material.
London-based designer Alice Crawley tried the trend out in her own home by encasing the walls of her study in cork. Not only does it look great, but the cork also “serves as a practical place to plant ideas on,” and adds “an interesting texture and tone to the space,” she explains in an Instagram caption. “I love the nostalgic feel of a cork wall — a nod to the ’70s retro vibe,” the designer adds. “It’s also a relatively inexpensive finish, and has some pretty epic soundproofing qualities too, which is handy in a bustling home to 6!”
