This Dollar Tree Holiday DIY Turns a Dining Staple into a Gorgeous Throw Pillow
Just because a home item is small, doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily cheap. A perfect example of that is throw pillows (finding just a cover below $75 is an achievement!). Given how expensive they can be, it’s normal to avoid spending a ton on seasonal cushions. Before breaking your holiday budget, take a trip to Dollar Tree. One creator discovered how to turn a dining staple into gorgeous throw pillows, which could save you hundreds this season.
“Make one!” creator Analee Carter from @le_mama_sews exclaimed in a recent Instagram caption. “It’s soooo easy for all of my beginner sewists that are following.”
How to Turn Dollar Tree Placemats into Holiday Pillows
You don’t have to be an expert seamstress to get this project done. All you need is a seam ripper (and scissors will work in a pinch), fiber fill, and a needle and thread (you could also use fabric glue if you’re not a confident sewer).
Pick up a few double-sided Dollar Tree placemats: There are several available in stores right now, including this plaid one that fits the holiday season. Once you’re home, remove a few stitches from one side of the placemat and stuff it with fiber fill. Then stitch up the hole, and you have an adorable pillow that cost you less than $10 total to make!
You can re-create this DIY pillow using any place mat you love, as long as it has two layers of fabric and opens up (endless possibilities!).
“Omg I love you for this!!!” one person commented on Carter’s post. “I hate spending money on pillows, but I can definitely afford to do this!”
Another person added, “I bought two to sew together yesterday. I didn’t think about just opening. Now I’ll have two pillows! So glad I saw this.”
Get ready to get crafty and save a bunch of money while doing so. These DIY placemat pillows are such a great alternative to more expensive finds, and you’ll love bringing them out year after year.
