You Can Use a $2 IKEA Find to Make a Lamp That Looks 10x the Price
The mushroom lamp trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and with so many options out there, it can be hard to find the perfect one. If you’re struggling, it might be time to make your own instead. Instagram user Annabelle (@annabellejune_) hacked her very own mushroom lamp using two affordable IKEA finds, and the result looks so professional, no one will believe you made it yourself.
In her “12 Days of Gifting” series on Instagram, Annabelle shared how she used a glass KARAFF carafe and a glass BLANDA bowl from IKEA to get that mushroom shape. She started by spritzing both pieces with a stone effect spray paint to give them a bit of texture (though you could experiment with different paints if you want another look).
She then attached a battery-operated puck light to the interior of the bowl as a light bulb. The included remote control makes it super easy to turn the lamp on or off (or change the color) without having to disassemble the lamp.
She finished the project by placing the bowl on top of the carafe and turning the light on to reveal the final result. Cue the oohs and aahs!
“It’s important for me to point out this isn’t my original idea, and it’s been done so many times,” Annabelle wrote in her Instagram caption. “It’s such a cute hack, and honestly l’d be so happy if I got this for Christmas (my sister claimed this before I was even done shooting the final shot!)”
“I made two of these for my mum, and she loved them,” someone wrote in the comments. “So easy to make, and they look amazing.”
Another person added, “The best! I actually made this last year for my goddaughter, and it turned out great. She loves it!”
Both IKEA finds are under $5 each, which makes the starting cost of your mushroom lamp below $10. And even with the cost of the other materials, it’s likely to be cheaper than many other mushroom lamps on the market, including this one on Amazon, which clocks in at $45 and doesn’t even change colors. Even if you include the cost of the other materials, that comes out to $36, which is a whole $9 less — and you can use the other puck light and the spray paint for another lamp. That’s good news for you, your wallet, and everyone on your holiday shopping list!
