How to Make a Simple Scandi-Style Winter Wreath
‘Tis the season for festive front door wreaths—and this year, they’re more impactful than ever. Since big holiday celebrations can’t happen inside in 2020, adding a little spirit to your front door is a sweet way to share glad tidings with friends and neighbors from afar.
For those looking for something subtle and chic, this minimalist Scandi-inspired wreath fits the bill: It’s simple and stylish, and looks equally fitting in November as it does January.
This wreath is a breeze to make, too. You’ll probably need to order a couple things you don’t already have on hand, but they’ll be easy to find. Here’s how to create this chic Scandi-inspired wreath.
What you’ll need to make this Scandi-style wreath:
- 2-inch wood beads (you’ll need 18 of them to make this exact wreath)
- 12-inch metal hoop
- junior tube cutter
- leather strip or an old belt
- grommet
- duct tape
- fresh or faux eucalyptus branches and floral wire (optional)
Note: This project is somewhat adaptable to suit your budget, available resources, and taste. For instance, you can sub 1.5-inch beads for the 2-inch ones; this will give you a more delicate look, but will require more beads. You can also use ribbon in place of the leather strip.
How to make a Scandi-style wood wreath
1. Cut the tube
Clamp the tube cutter along the joint of the metal hoop and cut so that the hoop stretches open.
2. Add the wood beads
Slide the 2-inch wood balls around the hoop until it’s almost all the way full.
3. Pull the open sides of the hoop back together
Grab a friend for this part. Have them press the sides of the hoop together until the open ends line up, then wrap them together tightly with a small strip of duct tape.
4. Add a leather hanging tab
Cut a 4″ x 1″ strip of leather, lay it under the portion of the hoop where the tape covers the metal seam, and bring the ends up together to cover over the tape. Punch a grommet through the top section of the leather to create a tab for hanging the wreath.
Finish the wreath by adding a few springs of eucalyptus; attach with floral wire. Hang from the leather tab’s grommet.
