Savvy shoppers know you can find just about anything at your local dollar store, especially when it comes to budget-friendly buys that transform your home without breaking the bank. One TikToker was inspired by colorful trash cans she spotted at Dollar Tree, so she brought them home and turned them into planters for her large indoor plants.

TikTok user @iheartartstudios shared her find in a recent video, scoring a slew of these round plastic wastebaskets ($1.25 each) in varying hues. The Wisconsin-based artist then used an oil-based Sharpie paint marker ($12 for a four-pack) to write “Grow please” on each one. She then filled the cans with her plants, which fit perfectly for both her one-gallon and five-gallon pots, respectively.

The great thing about this DIY planter hack — aside from the fact that it costs so little — is that you can decorate your makeshift planter pots as creatively as you’d like using decals, paint, or more elaborate designs with markers. You can also leave them as is and they’ll look just as cute on display, adding the perfect amount of color to any space.

Commenters on both TikTok and Instagram loved the creative repurposing of the trash cans, with one Instagram commenter writing: “Genius!! Especially when planters are so expensive. Thank you for this idea. Definitely getting these.”

Head to your local dollar store to stock up and give your plants a bright new home.
