I Don’t Have AC, and This One Appliance Replaced My Fan, Heater, and Air Purifier
I was born and raised in Miami, so I thought I knew what it’s like to live in the sweltering heat – wrong. Blame it on all the concrete and the lack of central AC, but summers in New York are a different brand of scorching. And to make matters worse, there’s no AC in my apartment, so heat waves hit differently. I knew I’d need an arsenal of fans to survive this season, but what would I do with a bunch of fans once fall and winter roll around? Fortunately for me, I won’t have to find out, thanks to the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx.
An air purifier, cooling fan, and a heater rolled into one, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool is exactly what I needed to make my apartment livable all year round. And after testing it for the past few months, I can say that I won’t need another fan, purifier, or space heater, ever again – it’s all of the above! Read on for my full review.
A Quick Look at the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx
- An air purifier that evenly cools and warms spaces
- Combined HEPA+K-Carbon filter captures 99.97% of particles
- Continuously monitors air quality to banish odors, gases, and pollutants
- Controllable via the MyDyson app and the included remote control
- 10 speed settings
Design Features That Stand Out
A major standout is the purifier’s HEPA+K-Carbon filter contained in its base, which captures 99.97% of particles polluting your home’s air. And unlike Dyson’s previous Purifier Hot+Cool HP07 model (that’s also loved by editors), the HEPA+K-Carbon filter is infused with potassium carbonate, which captures 50% more nitrogen dioxide – a pollutant commonly produced by gas appliances, wood burning stoves, and open flames. So you’re getting exceptional purification here.
Besides, as someone who, frankly, doesn’t have the space in her apartment to store multiple appliances, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool’s 3-in-1 design feels absolutely perfect for me (who doesn’t love a multipurpose appliance?!). There are two ways to control it: from the MyDyson phone app, which gives you comprehensive air quality ratings in real time, and from the included remote control if you’d rather go analog. The device also features an easy-to-read display on the base that indicates the air quality and lets you know when it’s time to change your filter (the brand recommends replacing it once a year).
How It Performed
While it’s too soon to put the purifier’s heating function to the test (I’ll circle back when the temperatures drop), the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool has been a lifesaver during the recent heatwaves in NYC. Its 350-degree oscillation and powerful 10-speed settings keep my living room (the warmest spot in my apartment) from turning into a literal oven on 90-degree days. I also love that the purifier can be tilted from its base to direct airflow exactly where I need it.
I have mine positioned in my living room, and because the space is shared with my kitchen, the Dyson’s multi-functional design truly gets to work. It cools me off while I’m working from my couch and banishes food smells while my husband is whipping up dinner in the kitchen. Even better, it does this without commanding a ton of attention. It’s fairly quiet compared to other fans and purifiers I’ve tried, and combined with its stout silhouette, it’s impressively low profile for such a powerful appliance. The purifier’s auto function has given me so much peace of mind, too. It kicks up on its own as it detects pollutants in the air so I don’t have to think twice!
What we love
- It absorbs 50% more nitrogen dioxide
- It captures 99.97% of particles
- It cools, heats, and purifies air
- It has a small-space-friendly footprint
- It’s relatively quiet
Good to know
- It’s quite expensive
- The cord is quite short
Should You Buy the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx
If you want to invest in a fan that does the absolute most – without splurging on multiple devices – all within a small-space-friendly footprint, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx is 100 percent it. The cooling function has been clutch on hot summer days, and the next-level filtration keeps the air in my apartment clean and odor-free around the clock. I love that I won’t have to worry about finding a place to store it once the weather cools down, either. I can enjoy its air purifying function all year-round, and warm up with it as a space heater once the forecast gets frosty. It’s the ultimate convenience that somehow doesn’t skimp on any of its claims.
Buy: Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx, $700 (normally $950)
