Before & After: Emily Henderson’s Kitchen Changed How I Store My Pot Holders
Because I write about organizing and cleaning, it’s not too often that I come across a new-to-me way to store things. But that’s exactly what makes it extra exciting when I do. Poring over the details in Emily Henderson’s storage-savvy mountain house kitchen was not only eye candy; it gave me the special kind of thrill that novel inspiration does.
I keep my kitchen in good working order—everything functions as it should and I don’t experience any frustrating hiccups when I cook and clean in it. It all makes me a little complacent. I rarely question the decisions I’ve made and, honestly, not too much has changed since I unpacked our kitchen when we moved in. But I saw something in a picture Emily shared that motivated me to make a change in something I’d never thought twice about: how I store my pot holders.
Normally, I keep my oven mitts in a drawer that’s directly to the left of my oven. I squeeze them into that awkward space between my drawer divider and the side of the drawer, above my silicone muffin cups. Recently, I discovered—the hard way—that my mitt had a hole in it, so the space has been empty. But when I saw Emily’s potholder and trivet hanging on the inside of a lower cabinet door, I knew my new pot holders wouldn’t be going back in the drawer.
I bought a replacement oven mitt and pot holder set and some small brushed nickel finish hooks at the same time and hung them on my own lower cabinet door.
It’s the perfect spot for them and it’s so much easier to hang them up than to stuff them in the drawer and then rearrange them when they keep the drawer from closing! I love storing something without taking up any space.
I don’t know yet what I’ll do with the newfound room in my drawer, but having it opens up all kinds of organization possibilities.
