Why we have a crush on this property

Attention, home project enthusiasts: A brick ranch bursting with 1970s charm is on the market in Savannah. All its new owners need are a retro-chic vision and a work-hard mindset.

The fixer-upper on Chevy Chase Road brims with potential. Its exterior is in great shape—groovy orange shutters and trim, plus Greek key entryway accents, lend the place a “Brady Bunch” kitchen vibe. The inside, though, is where the brunt of the work needs to be done.

A good place to start? The home’s two full bathrooms. Total overhauls are in order, requiring a swap-out of the tubs, toilets, and tile. Aging linoleum floors and royal blue carpeting could be stripped from some of the bedrooms and living spaces, while that laundry room might need some help streamlining its air vent system. A good cleaning of the garage can be saved for after the move-in.

The eat-in kitchen is the star of the show here, with wood wainscoting, retro checkered floors, and original wood cabinets. (It’d be a shame not to preserve those cabinets, if you ask me.) The living room is a close second in terms of ’70s charm. As Apartment Therapy’s real estate editor, it will always be my take to keep wood paneling. For proof, see my plea to retain a wood-paneled basement’s character here.

To top it off, this $119,900 home is tucked on a leafy corner lot. It’s about a five-minute drive from Savannah’s historic district and downtown, and an even shorter drive to the site of Savannah’s new entertainment arena. The $165 million project is on track to open in February 2022.
