Bright kitchen with white cabinets, colorful striped shelves, a farmhouse sink, and a bowl of vegetables on the table.

Recently, I moved to a new apartment in Los Angeles and I’m lucky to have a small breakfast nook in my kitchen consisting of two chairs and a circular table. However, since my husband and I prefer to eat at our dining table, I had been meaning to convert that nook into an analog arts and crafts area where I can unwind after a long day of work.

The only hiccup was that the nook didn’t have space for a storage cabinet, and I didn’t want to clutter the table with supplies. I thought I’d have to lug everything around in a tote until I came across an Apartment Therapy article that showed how a garden trellis could be used as a wall-mounted storage solution. It sounded strange at first, but for less than $15, I decided to give it a try.

Why a Garden Trellis Is a Brilliant Storage Gem

As shown in a TikTok video by @ForgeCore, a garden trellis — originally designed to support plants, vines, and vining produce — can also be used to organize supplies vertically. You can add baskets and shelves to create a DIY storage system that’s both practical and cute.

What Happened When I Put a Garden Trellis in My Kitchen

I decided to go with this wooden trellis from Amazon. It’s minimal yet warm and can go on any wall in my home. As I’m currently renting my apartment, I knew right away that I would have to use heavy-duty double-sided mounting tape to attach it to my kitchen wall. Luckily, I had some Scotch-Mount Indoor Double-Sided Mounting White Tape lying around.

The next step was to add baskets to store my supplies. I looked around my kitchen and found a stack of pint-size plastic berry baskets I’d collected from my farmers market runs. I had saved them to reuse, and they were perfect for this hack; I secured them to the garden trellis using the double-sided tape.

Lastly, I brought in my supplies, including paper clips, pens, colored pencils, rubber bands, glue, and tape, and placed them in the baskets. My arts and crafts nook was ready. Since mounting the trellis, I’ve been using the nook almost every day after work and have been thoroughly enjoying it.

While the baskets work well for now, I’m planning on replacing them with sturdier shelves in a few months. Moreover, since I love this hack so much (and it’s so affordable!), I’m thinking of mounting an additional garden trellis in my bedroom next to my dresser to store my jewelry and hair accessories.
