The start of fall is a great time to embark upon a few new projects outside the house. And they don’t all have to be chores, either! (Although the cooler weather does make those more manageable.)

Give your gutters a rinse-off, put summer toys in storage, or splurge on a cute new doormat and change out your wreath, if you’re looking to do some shopping or add some fun visual appeal. No matter what project you choose to take on, autumn is a great time to give your home a little TLC.

At the start of September, professional photographer and DIYer Katelyn Cash decided to give her once-white front door a new coat of paint for fall. “I wanted the home to reflect more of the mid-century style that it showcases,” she says.

The color she went with? Magnolia Home’s Brushed Clay, a gold color reminiscent of a bright hickory or maple tree at fall’s peak. Best yet, Katelyn says the gold color highlights the rectangle details on the door.

“I love how, now, the lines of the mid-century door really stand out,” she says. “Painting the door a mustard color really brings out the warm tones inside as well. It’s like a sneak peek of what to expect inside!”

Katelyn split the project into two days. The first coat took one hour; then the next day after it dried, she came back with a second coat, which took about 20 minutes. She says it was a “very easy project and really gives good curb appeal!”

Her best painting advice? “Take the time to prep your door,” she says. “Sanding [and] taping off hardware is worth it before getting started with painting.”

Katelyn upped the fall vibes even more with a Hocus Pocus-themed doormat from Shut the Front Door, a new black wreath, and some potted mums. “Chrysanthemums bring my Scorpio heart joy,” she says on TikTok.

Happy Libra and Scorpio season to all, and happy fall decorating!
