This Goodwill Hack Is Exclusive for Gen X or Older
The thrill of the hunt that thrifting provides has been my vice of choice since the ’90s. When I bought my first home, I shopped at local Goodwill stores for one-of-a-kind pieces that I still cherish to this day. That thrill has never left me as I’ve moved homes and as decades have passed.
I remember one hunt in particular. Two “older” ladies pulled up their chairs at a mint-condition Duncan Phyfe knock-off dining set. They were debating whether or not it was a good deal. When the sales associate told me it was marked $220, I couldn’t believe they were hesitating: Duncan Phyfe-style tables can sell for thousands of dollars online, sometimes almost as high as $4,000. So of course I promptly paid him on the spot, pulled up to the loading dock, and never looked back.
I’m now probably older than those ladies were at the time. As my 55th birthday approaches, I can’t help but laugh as discounts from the likes of AARP have begun flooding my algorithm. Just the other day, someone I follow on Instagram piqued my interest when they revealed that Goodwill offers Senior Days (for 55+ shoppers) with discounts up to 35% off depending on the location. How I didn’t know about this before was beyond me.
How the Goodwill Senior Days Discount Works
Because there are more than 3,400 Goodwill stores across North America, which are operated by over 150 local organizations, every Goodwill organization works a little differently. For example, my regional Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. invites shoppers ages 60 and up to enjoy a 20% discount on Wednesdays. But that’s a ways off for me.
In contrast, the Chattanooga, Tennessee, Goodwill stores offer 25% off regularly priced items on Wednesdays for people aged 55 and older, while Cincinnati, Ohio, stores offer a 35% discount on Mondays. Depending on where I bought my precious dining set back in the day, it may have been as low as $77 with discounts applied.
While I wait to turn 60, I can take advantage of the True Blue Rewards Loyalty Program, which doesn’t have an age requirement — only my phone number is required to opt in for texted promotions. With this program, members get five to seven offers throughout the year, including a birthday $5 off $25 offer, which can be stacked on top of the weekly colored tag 50% discount. What’s more, those weekly colored tags go to a 99-cent deal each Sunday.
As Boomers Downsize, Goodwill Will Be a Gold Mine for Gen X
Known as the “Silver Tsunami” by many American economists, the largest American generation in history has grown to over 70 million Americans over 65 years old, according to the National Association of Realtors. And, with this large number, inevitable downsizing is predicted. Ageist as “Silver Tsunami” may sound, the reality is that Boomers are starting to let go of their stuff.
“Goodwill Middle Tennessee has absolutely seen an increase in donations over the last several years. In 2025, Goodwill Middle Tennessee had a record-breaking 2 million donations,” says Emma Balkenbush, PR and communications manager of Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. While Balkenbush attributes this spike in donations to many factors, it stands to reason that it’s a perfect storm for us Gen X thrifters to take advantage of deeper discounts in a sea of secondhand riches.
Just Because It’s Cheap Doesn’t Mean I Need It
If there’s one tip to I need to remember, though, it’s to resist the temptation to over-consume. On a recent trip to a Goodwill where I did qualify for the senior discount, I found several dated (yet well-made) pieces with the tag color of the week. Because I sew, I contemplated whether to repurpose them into new pillows or something.
Realistically, they would probably sit in my to-be-donated pile for months before I donated them back to Goodwill. I left the store empty-handed thinking about what Gen X downsizing will look like. Something tells me I will remain as feral as my generation has been touted, and I’m good with that. Yet, I do wonder who will find my Duncan Phyfe knock-off a good deal at the Goodwill years from now.
