This Simple Project Takes Storage to A Whole New Level

When it comes to storage, there are things we want conveniently within reach, and easy to grab at a moment’s notice. And then there are things we have to keep out of necessity, but only use occasionally (and sometimes, face it, never at all). Hanging some storage up near the ceiling is a great way to make the most of your square footage. These floor-freeing solutions that give us very high hopes.

These guys installed shelves high up above their doorways using some basic boards and inexpensive brackets. While it might not work as a spot for the sweaters and t-shirts you wear everyday, it’s great for their collection of books and storage bins. And is that a speaker up there? Pulling out a step stool or a ladder is certainly doable when you have to pull down some old paperwork or magazines.

This is a clever idea, spotted in a Brooklyn townhouse designed by Bangia Agostinho Architecture. A locker is a pretty big piece of furniture and, although great storage, does take up a good amount of space when placed on the floor. But, turn one on its side, and mount on the wall near the ceiling, and all that good storage is nicely out of the way.

If you do use something every day, like the bike above, you can devise ways to make it more accessible. This Toronto loft has sky high ceilings, so they owners were able to put them good use, without it looking claustrophobic. Bicycle pulley storage systems, like the one you see here, are the best of both worlds: They keep your objects up high and out of reach, but easily lower without a lot of work. They are also very affordable.

And then there’s storage within storage. Philip’s a self-described handy guy and added an extra shelf at the very top of his bedroom closet. It’s a quick and easy task, do-able even in a rental apartment.

Don’t despair if there’s not enough space in your kitchen cabinets to tuck away your pots and pans. There are ways to stylishly store your cookware out in the open, up high above your range. There are hanging pot racks available to match pretty much any kitchen.
