I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

Wall-mounted headboards are budget-friendly options that work well in temporary spaces (or if you’re a renter who doesn’t want to drill any holes). But when and if you choose to move to a bed frame, you’ll want to pause before ditching the hanging headboard. Portland-based designer, Gretchen Raguse, who works for stylist Emily Henderson, has a better idea.

Gretchen’s 615-square-foot Portland apartment was featured in the video above, where we highlighted dream bedrooms that you’ll want to copy. One of the reasons her room is so great is how she repurposed her old wall-mounted headboard into artwork. (I would’ve never guessed it was a headboard at first glance, and can’t stop thinking about it ever since seeing it.)

How to Use a Wall-Hanging Headboard As Artwork

After moving her bed to another wall, which had two large windows and no space for a headboard, Gretchen decided to leave her headboard where it was originally and make some changes.

“Over on this wall is another choice,” Gretchen explains in the video above. “This used to be my headboard back when my bed was on this side of the room. It was sort of a harvest gold color before, but I painted it a baby puke green because that’s one of my favorite colors.”

What makes it look like art is how confidently it’s displayed in the room. The bold color choice immediately draws your eye to it, making it feel intentional. It’s also hanging above a seating area and almost takes up the entire wall. It looks like it was always meant to be there.

If you’re about to upgrade from a wall-mounted headboard to a full bed frame, think twice before donating or selling it on Facebook Marketplace. With a little imagination (and maybe a touch of paint, like on Gretchen’s), you could turn the piece into a work of art that can be displayed virtually anywhere. I could see it above couches or credenzas in dining rooms — basically anywhere!

There are many more clever tricks to discover than just this headboard. Check out all the House Tours featured in this post’s video roundup.
