I think fashion designer Haley Boyko‘s design style is so nice, I’ve toured her homes thrice. The first time, we toured a Brooklyn apartment Haley was renting, and the second time it was a loft in Long Beach. Today it’s this 1400-square-foot, three-bedroom rental house on Costa Mesa’s East Side. While each of the past three homes have had different architectural vibes, they’ve all had Haley’s colorful, graphic, exuberant style, which I frankly love.

Haley says that the oldest thing in their home is the blue painting with red and white stripes on the living room wall. "My uncle Rick painted that when he was in college, and I love it!"

“My home is definitely a reflection of myself, as well as my business. I think a lot of people walk into our house and think ‘how could you relax in here’ but I feel so peaceful in this house. Anyone who knows me personally is also very unsurprised at the look of the home I have created,” explains Haley, who is the designer behind Hello Boyko, a fashion label as cool and colorful as her home decor style.

“I think it makes a lot of sense when you know me and know how I am,” she continues describing of her bold home. “I have a really hard time existing in a more barren space and actually feel really uneasy. I am NOT a relaxed person and need to be stimulated or doing something with my hands at all times, so this house perfectly fits how my brain feels. There’s a lot to look at, and I think that it’s just plain old fun.”

The dining chairs are from IKEA but Haley painted them herself.

You’ll recognize a few of the same pieces she’s had in past homes, along with new finds she’s collected over the years. But because this is a larger space than previous homes, she and her husband, Nick Sylvester, had to get a little creative to fill the home. “We definitely had some budget challenges, considering this was more space that we were used to,” she admits.

The domino cutting board is from Handy Dandy Brandy.

“I really desperately wanted a different color couch, but we didn’t want to spend the money on one, so with some digging I was able to find a supplier on Etsy who would make new cushion covers of popular IKEA model couches! Which was such a find. We got new cushion covers made for this same couch we have had for years for about $300, which was a steal!” Haley shares as an example.

Haley and Nick also used paint to create a visual impact on a budget — they painted the bedroom’s walls yellow, and the office wall blue. “I think paint is such an easy thing that can be done to transform a space. It’s also so easy to change back if you are a renter!” she writes.

The couple also upgraded the guest bathroom in a renter-friendly way, thanks to peel-and-stick floor tiles. “We used Otto studio and I cannot recommend them enough. NOT all peel-and-stick floor tiles are created equally! I learned that the hard way by using cheap ones a while back and they left so much residue that I had to spend weeks getting it off,” she describes.

Haley's collection of beaded handbags make great art pieces, too!

All Haley’s homes, past and present, are just so joyful to look at. “There’s always a story behind each piece of art in this house and how we found it, and that’s something I really love about collecting things. I like to look at things that make me smile, and this house brings me such joy,” Haley writes.

“I also just think there is something so special about sitting on the couch and looking at the walls of your home and being reminded of that one antique store where I found that one outrageous needlepoint clown art.”
