Before and After: HGTV’s “50K Three Ways” Gives a Dated Space a Modern Farmhouse Makeover
Most homeowners have at least one corner or room in their house that they want to renovate, but life gets in the way and projects get pushed for years. In the latest episode of HGTV’s “50K Three Ways,” that’s what happened to one couple when they moved into their new home with a six-month-old baby. Several years and another baby later, they finally felt like they could take a break and refresh their dated spaces to reflect their taste — and brought in Tiffany Brooks to help allocate their funds and execute the right projects.
Out of all the rooms, Chris and Lauren decided to focus on their kitchen and entryway. While the kitchen served its purpose, the appliances and style felt dated to the couple — and they had the Formica countertops to prove it (but hey, Brooks did say she sees them coming back in 25 years!).
The orientation of the kitchen prevented them from getting the most out of the space, so the first thing Brooks did was switch things around a bit. She got rid of all the cabinets and reinstalled new ones on another wall that made for a more functional layout, then added in a massive island to really achieve dream kitchen goals.
Brooks also infused a farmhouse-inspired style with a modern spin, as requested by Chris and Lauren. The color palette was simple, focusing on natural woods, white, gold, and blue. Brooks added gold accents through the cabinet hardware, light fixtures, and bar stools that gave the room some extra shine, and she also covered the range hood with shiplap to bring that farmhouse vibe home.
The kitchen wasn’t the only place that Brooks wanted to decorate with shiplap. In order to make Chris and Lauren’s entryway more stylish, Brooks covered the sides of the staircase in panels of shiplap to add texture into the room. She also added a small but impactful gallery wall of mirrors to the middle level of the staircase, and a modern light fixture accented in gold.
The other tweaks made to the entryway were simple yet effective. New carpeting on the stairs, hardwood flooring, and a coat of off-white wall paint transformed the room, creating a welcoming foundation that allowed the farmhouse vibe to be the star of the show.
