I pretty much make it a point to visit at least one T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, or HomeGoods every weekend. What can I say? I enjoy doing field research for you all. On my latest run, I was surprised to see a new-to-me store section pop up right by the entrance: the HomeGoods “Treasure Chest.”

What Is the HomeGoods’ “Treasure Chest”?

The HomeGoods Treasure Chest is a small section of merchandise that consists of a display case (or two, depending on the store), which is full of items behind lock and key. That’s because this is the spot where you will find a tight curation of premium merchandise. Think of shopping this new “section” as a shortcut to the best designer finds in store at any given moment.

Items span several categories. At my local store this past weekend, I spied vacuum cleaners, candles, fancy French cookware, bedding, blankets, and even some very high-end Italian house slippers. Make sure you scrutinize each of the shelves in the case carefully; pieces also can be stacked on top of one another, so take your time studying what’s inside.

How to Shop the HomeGoods’ “Treasure Chest”?

Because the pieces are locked up, you’ll need to call over a store associate if you want to know a price or see something up close. All you have to do is push a button to alert an employee that you’re at the case and ready to be helped. They’ll take it from there. The cool thing about these cases is that they can include clearance items as well. So keep an eye out for those red and yellow tags for the largest savings. And the tag decoding rules you’ve maybe heard before still apply.

Items are always rotating in and out of the cases, as inventory comes in, and people buy different things. So you will want to scoop up anything you see here quickly — and check back often for restocks.

A few more tips? While this is the first place I beeline to now when I hit any HomeGoods, it’s not the only place I look for a high-end haul. These cases are only so big, so you will still find amazing merchandise on the shelves in all of a given store’s departments.

Finally, sometimes these cases could be located closer to a certain department if they contain a lot of a given category. In my travels, I have seen a single case closer to the back of a store near the bedding, for example, if it’s fully stocked with just throws, duvets, pillows, and the like. But I’ve never seen the “Treasure Chests” inside a given department. They’re always in a walkway, so you will be sure to see them when you do your laps as you shop.
