With its loft-like essence, exposed brick, and beautifully industrial structural elements, this apartment has felt like home for Katy and Devin since day one. Having lived in D.C. for six years, Devin moved from one side of the wall (the apartment next door) to the other when Katy moved from NYC to D.C. last year. Since then, they’ve created a lovely, unique home together.
Devin is the Senior Advisor for Emerging Markets at the United States Department of Energy, and Katy works at lululemon athletica and teaches yoga. They shared their first kiss nine years ago in Seattle, traveled separate ways for some time, and found love again in NYC—in large part thanks to Instagram. With their busy work and travel schedules, weekends at home reading The New York Times, discovering new music, sipping warm coffee, and playing with their dog, Ace, are treasured.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Minimal, industrial, modern with a splash of the past.
Inspiration: The cities and hotels in which we travel, design blogs, and Pinterest have shaped the inspiration for space in combining our homes this year.
Favorite Element: The exposed brick and natural infrastructure.
Biggest Challenge: Ensuring Ace doesn’t take ownership of our faux fur blanket.
What Friends Say: It’s a unique space that perfectly suites our personalities.
Biggest Embarrassment: The electric stove. No one likes a poorly cooked egg.
Proudest DIY: The shelving for the speakers. We chose brackets and shelving and had a blast making the most of a fine rainy day last spring.
Biggest Indulgence: Our stereo and speaker system. It’s dreamy.
Best Advice: Don’t be afraid to mix and match styles and inspirations.
Dream Sources: Continued travel around the world, Pinterest, Design Within Reach, West Elm, anything and everything Scandinavian.
