Andréa and Stefan’s home is a 700-square-foot unit in a modern condo overlooking the beautiful skyline of Toronto’s downtown. The eastern view is what sold the couple on this particular unit, and you can’t blame them. Even if the condo was completely empty, it would still be gorgeous with that view. Featuring modern furniture and a large collection of art and bohemian accents, it’s clear the hardworking couple has prioritized creating a beautiful home.

One area of the space that Andréa and Stefan are particularly proud of is the bedroom; they DIYed a custom feature wall behind the bed. The bold patterned paper is rich in tone, but proved to be quite the challenge during installation. However, it was worth the pain of hand pasting it on the wall. It was finished with a gold molding around the corners, and now the bedroom looks extremely luxurious and rich. “All the hard work makes unwinding there at the end of the day a much sweeter experience,” reports Andréa.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Bohème Moderne, AKA Modern Bohemian (because everything sounds classier in French)

Inspiration: Physical things: album art, vintage markets, and decorating books. Namely Rebecca Atwood’s book, Living with Pattern (fun fact: Andréa designed her award-winning website!). Digital treasure troves: Home Polish, and anything Emily Henderson does.

Favorite Element: Stefan loves the luxurious velvets and deep jewel tones in the bedroom and living room. Andréa has a deep maternal love for all of their plant babies—10 in total.

Biggest Challenge: Finding little nooks for work and reflection in a small condo. We’re both workaholics, which is why we have four surfaces in our small 700-square-foot space that inspire productivity. Creating nooks for creativity and personal introspection was a challenge, but we feel as though we’ve carved them out in the best way.

What Friends Say: “Your home looks like a West Elm catalogue.” and “You two live in a magazine.”

Biggest Embarrassment: The amount of tchotchkes we own. We both have hoarder tendencies, which makes storage very difficult in a condo. Every one of our (many) storage solutions is bursting at the seams. We bid adieu to any minimalist life aspirations a while ago.

Proudest DIY: Two of the four walls in the bedroom: We applied nonwoven wallpaper the traditional way with paste (which proved to be the ultimate test of our relationship). Once our relationship was back intact, we also mitered and pasted on the gold moulding, and sewed and lengthened the curtains. All the hard work makes unwinding there at the end of the day a much sweeter experience.

Biggest Indulgence: All. of. the. plants. and their respective “homes” (AKA decorative pots). And the couch…that was a big splurge for us; it was one of the biggest furniture purchases we’ve ever made together. We wanted something visually dramatic but very comfortable, and we couldn’t be happier with it.

Best Advice: Don’t rush! Fill your space with a combination of things that are deeply personal (like travel prints of life’s pivotal moments) and things that move you from a purely aesthetic sense. These things accumulate with time and experiences, so take it slow and enjoy the process. That’s how you’ll find the best pieces for your space, and not break the bank. And if you’re a hoarder like us—remember you can always get rid of things, too, by swapping them out for things you like even better.
