When Lindsay and Chris moved to Nashville a few years ago from New York, they lucked out in finding this perfect-for-them home (complete with three outdoor cats from the previous owner). With Lindsay’s love of color and design and Chris’ deep-rooted love of mid-century pieces (many of their furniture items are from his mother), they have created a home that boasts a contemporary take on mid-century design and is true to their personal style.

Each room in their home has a nickname to go with the look of the space. The living or “Draper Room” is named for the one and only Don Draper, and every aspect of this room exudes a sense of the namesake. From the classy bar to the soothing sounds on the record player, this room feels like a place one could find the fictional advertising maestro.

Their bedroom is called the “Cabana Room” and has the distinct feeling of being at a swanky beach resort in the early ’60s. The tropical influences are seen all around the room but none are overbearing.

The “Jungle Room” is aptly named for its wall-size mural of banana and monster leaf plants and its fun pops of green color. Their “Café Room” off of the kitchen houses a glorious Danish Modern teak table and enough sitting room to entertain guests…and maybe play a board game or two.

Each room is unique in its own right but everything works together in continuity to make the home feel comfortable, modern and fun.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Mid-Century Modern Quirk.

Inspiration: Travel. We have traveled to a handful of places that celebrate an airiness in their design. Places like Croatia, Iceland, Japan, Denmark, and Sweden.

Favorite Element: Color.

Biggest Challenge: Our biggest challenge is creating multi-functional spaces in a house built in 1949. We want to honor the age of the house and still make it comfortable and modern.

What Friends Say: The first time we entertained in our house someone walked in and exclaimed how small it is. Having just moved from NYC, we were like, uh, there are rooms we are not IN right now… it’s like a mansion to us! Now when friends visit our home for the first time they say it looks exactly like they thought it would!

Biggest Embarrassment: The horrible paint that used to cover all of the trim, cabinets, doors, and windows before we purchased the house. It’s this strange plastic-y white stuff that was slopped on and peels off easily. Someday it will all be restored, but for now just don’t look directly at the door jam on your way through the front door.

Proudest DIY: The redesign on The Jungle Room. We spoke for ages with a designer that couldn’t quite understand what we needed with our spare bedroom: A space that could be used for design and sewing but also as storage and spare bedroom. After getting the $15,000 estimate we decided to take a fraction of that and design it ourselves.

Biggest Indulgence: The hand-painted mural in The Jungle Room. We wanted wallpaper in that room, but the price tag would have been insane, so we asked our friend and muralist Chip Boles to create a vintage inspired banana and monstera leaf pattern on white.

Best Advice: Get everything off the floor.

Dream Sources: Eames, The Case Study Houses, Danish Design, anything that blends new and old.
