With the constant sunny Los Angeles weather, Drew Vuong wanted to incorporate his love of outdoors and patio living in the inside of his home. He has created a great space for entertaining, leisure, and displaying his favorite artwork both personal and collected. He believes the most essential part of designing a home is to “fill it with friends and sort the rest out with time.”

What I love most about Drew’s cozy spacious home is that there is so much to look at. He really has created a way for you to get to know him just by enjoying the environment. One of my favorite elements is that he has a park picnic table indoors that is inscribed by his friends from over the years. I also really love his creative use of space in the bedroom with the open-facing storage shelving.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Summer Camp Supper Club. I am either entertaining with a dinner party or deep into a forgotten project.

Inspiration: Textile art, contemporary art and road trips.

Favorite Element: My indoor picnic table. It’s the heart of the house, where my friends gather and where my friends have left a literal mark. It’s a communal work in progress.

Biggest Challenge: Making a cohesive space while giving each room its own feel. Biggest room challenge was the small kitchen. I have learned to embrace it being small despite cooking a lot. I have organized the kitchen for how I can constantly use it. Besides, I now have a bigger dining room, a patio, front yard, parking and a backyard — all great for entertaining. So it was great trade-off.

What Friends Say: “Drew, you’re so classy!” They may actually mean “You have too many delicate glass objects in your home.”

Biggest Embarrassment: I really hate the tile in my kitchen. But it’s nothing a runner can’t take care of.

Proudest DIY: The air plant terrarium chandelier. It was the first project I completed for the apartment and still love it.

Biggest Indulgence: Framing the large artwork in the bedroom. Totally worth it!

Best Advice: Be friends with a pushy decorator (Hi Leslie!) who has lots of great ideas and a few good hand-me-downs; also get some free art from your little niece or nephew.

Dream Sources: Lawson Fenning, Amsterdam Modern and flea markets from all over the world. And maybe a real work studio space for more DIY projects because God knows I need more pending projects in my life.
