This isn’t the first time we’ve had the chance to visit hair stylist John Ruggiero at home. Seven years ago we toured a Hollywood house he shared with two roommates, and now we’re touring the Carthay Circle rental he shares with his roommate Jake. Jake and John both have a love of vintage mid-century pieces, photography, and colorful spaces. And when it comes to designing and decorating a home, Jake believes: “Everything is essential and it’s important that it all work together, flowing as one cohesive experience, even when rooms are slightly varied in aesthetic.”
Both Jake and John are originally from New York, and they wanted to bring that New York edge into their home. “What’s resulted, in our opinion, is a perfect mashup of West Coast meets East Coast vibe.”
In just 1200 square feet, there is so much to feast your eyes on. Together they have an incredible collection of artwork, books and memorabilia from their childhoods. Jake says the most significant thing in the home are the “Louis Kahn paintings that he gifted to my great grandmother (they were friends), that she gifted to me before she passed away.” And for John, it’s the “1940s original Knoll day bed that was found at an estate sale and purchased for less than $500!”
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Heavily mid-century modern influenced, mixed with collected pieces from international travels, always ensuring that nothing is too serious.
Inspiration: 1960s gay culture, childhood nostalgia, mid-century modern
Favorite Element: Childhood/family photos, collected African pieces
Biggest Challenge: Stopping/editing down, and HIDING CORDS
What Friends Say: “Can you come do my apartment!”
Biggest Embarrassment: Nothing comes to mind! YAY!
Proudest DIY: Wifi enablement/automated home installation – lighting, thermostat, video doorbell, coffeemaker
Biggest Indulgence: Farrow & Ball Paints
Best Advice: Buy things you love, and THEN figure out where to put them, rather then setting out to fill specific spaces and shopping for items for those spaces.
