Non-traditional headboards are having a moment. People are getting creative with things like framed linens, custom art, hand-painted murals, and even pool noodles (yes, really!).

In a recent house tour, Nasozi Kakembo shared her own take on the cushion headboard trend using a hacked IKEA bench cushion and ceramic Anthropologie knobs. Purchasing a headboard cushion can be a little expensive (Anthropologie sells one for $200), so Nasozi‘s version is a bit more budget-friendly.

She used a piece of wood, a bench cushion from IKEA, leather straps, and stylish knobs. To recreate this headboard in your home, you start by nailing a piece of wood to the wall, centered above the bed, to serve as the top of the headboard. Then, slide the leather straps around the piece of wood to act as hooks to hold the cushion.

Once this is done, you can really customize this project to fit your personal style. You can virtually use any seat cushion you like. Kakemboda used one long cushion that’s the same length as the bed. You can do that, or you can buy two cushions and put them side by side. Whichever you decide, you can use ceramic knobs to secure the cushion to the leather straps.

As a designer, business owner, and mom, Nasozi’s designed her home for unique style and functionality on all levels. And this headboard doesn’t miss the mark — it’s stylish, affordable, and comfortable.
