Among other things, IKEA is one of my all-time favorite places to shop for lighting. And I’m not alone — it seems like every other week, there’s a new IKEA lamp going viral on social media. You just can’t beat the Swedish superstore’s incredible prices and adorable, on-trend designs.

The other day, during my bi-weekly browse of the IKEA website, I spotted a new lamp that actually stopped my scrolling. It’s vintage-inspired, tiny, and totally unique. What’s not to love? Let’s give a warm welcome to the KNÖLTÅNG, the newest addition to the legendary lamp lineup at IKEA and surely the next one to blow up TikTok.

What Is the IKEA KNÖLTÅNG?

Similar to the STRÅLA lamp that IKEA released as part of its seasonal winter lighting collection last year, the KNÖLTÅNG was designed to look like a vintage oil lamp (sadly the STRÅLA is no longer available, but it must have been popular enough for IKEA to introduce the KNÖLTÅNG as part of their permanent offerings). Instead of oil, of course, this little guy is powered by batteries. The simple matte ivory base feels timeless and luxurious when combined with the brass hardware, and the top of the lamp is also made of real glass.

Technically, this little lamp is listed by IKEA as an “LED table decoration.” That’s because the KNÖLTÅNG is super small (just 7” tall) so some might say it’s more of a candle than a lamp. But I’d argue that this little guy would shine just as bright when styled on a bookshelf or a coffee table as it would in your tablescape. A flickering LED “flame” perfectly imitates the cozy glow of a real candle; but even better than a candle, you can actually dim the KNÖLTÅNG using the little knob on its side. And if you don’t love the flickering, you can set the lamp to a steady glow instead by simply flipping the switch on the bottom.

What’s So Great About the KNÖLTÅNG?

This adorable little lamp is perfect for adding the tiniest touch of vintage whimsy to even the most modern of spaces. I haven’t yet seen it IRL, but according to the reviews the KNÖLTÅNG’s quality does not disappoint. “I bought one, wanting to put it in a curio cabinet,” writes one happy shopper. “This little light is absolutely perfect for adding a little twinkle to your space. I love it so much I went back and bought 5 more! I use them inside and out, wherever I want a little light and magic. Brilliant design!”

Whether you call it a lamp or a candle — or something in between — the KNÖLTÅNG is a pretty unique piece. It delivers the vintage vibes of an old-school kerosene lamp but without any of the impracticality (and flammability). It even has a built-in timer, meaning it never runs for more than 6 hours, and you can set it to turn on at the same time every day. Having a warm, cozy glow already flickering when I get home would certainly cheer me up come fall — and then winter, when the sun starts setting before I even reach the subway on my commute home. I’ll definitely pick up a few of these cuties on my next IKEA run.
