This Rustic IKEA Kitchen Storage Gem Belongs in Every Room

I don’t know about you, but bread boxes aren’t exactly a part of my life. In fact, I don’t know if I’ve ever lived somewhere that had one — even when I was a young kid. 

The concept of a box just for bread never struck me as necessary, but I’ve since learned that there’s so much more you can do with a bread box, which makes this rustic-yet-elegant new find from IKEA all the more exciting — because it’s secretly a storage superhero. 

One of the newest additions to IKEA, the $29.99 NALBLECKA bread box is a six-sided triangular wooden box with a lid on the front that slides open and closed, almost like a garage door. It measures 9 inches tall, 15 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. It’s made of natural bamboo, which IKEA says has “natural moisture-regulating properties and airflow” that “keeps bread fresh.”

However, this particular bread box comes with a few extra perks. There’s a short, wide storage shelf with slightly raised edges atop the box’s “roof,” and the “floor” of the box slides completely out to become a cutting board or serving platter. (It also helps to contain and dispel any inevitable breadcrumbs.)

Obviously, bread boxes are useful for storing bread. But at the end of the day, a bread box is just a box that opens and closes with a shelf and sometimes a removable tray, and there’s quite a lot you can do with that. If you don’t want to put a loaf of bread in it, use the interior for any other kitchen storage you may need.

In fact, you can probably find a good use for this bread box in every room of your house. Apartment Therapy contributor Wendy Rose Gould wrote about putting a bread box in her home office, saying it “swiftly conceals visual clutter” while keeping useful items like pens, stamps, and books within reach. Meanwhile, Senior Lifestyle Editor Quinn Fish suggests using a bread box as a chic, discreet place to store medications and supplements. Those are just a few ideas; despite the name, you can put anything you want in a bread box, and you can put that box in any room of your house.
