This IKEA Acacia Wood Storage Box Is My Own-It-for-Life Find (It’s a Family Favorite!)

Where I live in Australia, it’s common practice to put any unwanted items — everything from furniture to garden tools — out on the lawn for anyone passing by to take. It’s part curbside clean-out, part community treasure hunt. One day, a neighbor across the street from my grandparents’ home was doing a big spring decluttering and sitting out front was a slightly worn, easy to overlook wooden box from IKEA. I grabbed it, thinking it’d be a simple storage solution, but it quickly turned into far more meaningful and something I’d hold onto forever.

The IKEA NÄMMARÖ Storage Box is one of those quietly versatile pieces that works harder than it looks. Designed by Nike Karlsson and released in 2022, it’s an outdoor storage find made from a durable acacia wood in a warm natural tone and comes pre-treated to withstand outdoor elements, while still working just as well indoors, too. It measures 31 1/2 inches wide, 15 3/4 inches deep, and 17 3/4 inches high, and has a max load of 243 pounds.

When I brought mine home secondhand, it had definitely seen better days. The lid was scratched, and the finish had dulled. But after a quick sand and fresh coat of stain, it completely transformed. The wood grain came back to life, and it looked refreshed without losing its character. For those planning to use the box outdoors, IKEA actually recommends restaining it once or twice a year to keep it fresh and protected. 

I do a lot of DIY and woodworking when I’m at my grandparents’ house, so at first, it felt like a purely practical find that wasn’t bad on the eyes. With its hidden storage, I imagined it filled with tools, spare materials, and the scrap pieces I’d usually leave scattered around until there was a use. As I carried it across the street, I was already preparing my case for why it should stay. After all, my grandparents were in their late 90s and more focused on letting go of things than bringing in anything new. But almost immediately, my grandpa gravitated toward it, and before I even had the chance to use it for storage, it became something else entirely.

My grandpa ended up passing away just days short of his 100th birthday. That IKEA box was never meant to be more than a practical find, but it’s now something I’ll keep forever, and as a reminder to slow down and enjoy the sunshine.

One thing to note: The lid isn’t attached, so you have to fully lift it off to access what’s inside. After refinishing mine, I added hinges to make it easier to open and close. I’ve seen some chatter online of others wishing the same, so hopefully IKEA adds that feature in the future. 

At $125, it’s a relatively affordable piece that can adapt to a range of needs. And while I may have picked mine up for free, it’s one I’d happily pay for and recommend, not just for its practicality, but for how seamlessly it fits into everyday life.
