IKEA’s Cozy Outdoor Chair Will Instantly Transform Any Space into a Beach Retreat

When I think of summer, I’m immediately dropped into the memory of my grandma’s home in Florida. We’d sip drinks (a chocolate SlimFast for her; a Sprite for me) on her lanai and watch the palm trees sway in the Sanibel breeze. I remember feeling so cozy, and that was largely because I loved being with my nanny, but also likely because of the comfortable furniture. It’s safe to say that I always feel a twinge of nostalgia when I spot a chair that looks like that feeling. 

And the serene garden in Marja and Harry’s renovated home has just the piece of furniture that encapsulates those memories for me. It’s a handwoven chair that’s made of rattan, bamboo, and acacia wood that’ll age naturally — and, according to Google Image Search, it’s IKEA’s HOLMSTA / FRÖKNABO outdoor chair. It’s a well-known piece that’s been recommended by experts as comfortable patio furniture, too. The one bummer is that it’s, unfortunately, not available in the United States. 

I believe that natural woods and rattan scream summer. And seeing furniture made of this material, especially when it’s topped with bright cushions like Marja and Harry’s, makes me feel nostalgic. While it’s unfortunate that this specific chair isn’t available in America’s markets, there are some other similar pieces available. 

If you’re hoping to shop at IKEA, then the NÄMMARÖ lounge chair (which is part of the larger NÄMMARÖ collection) is a pretty similar option. It has a five-star rating on the brand’s website, and comes in two colors. Between the smooth, solid acacia wood and polyester-stuffed cushion, this chair looks like the most comfortable spot to curl up and read a book (no matter the season!). It seems like reviewers agree with that idea. 

“Like the other reviews, this chair is easy to put together, spacious, and comfortable,” one reviewer on IKEA’s website wrote. “Very happy with the purchase. Will be getting other chairs from this series.”

If you don’t have an IKEA near you or if it’s unavailable for shipping, don’t fret: Wayfair is offering a slightly more expensive option that looks pretty similar. Like IKEA’s chair, it comes in two colors (natural and brown) and is made of solid wood. Not only is this chair incredibly comfortable — thanks to its wide seat and polyester fabric cushions — but it is also striking. The back of the chair has a woven design that will immediately grab guests’ attention. 

The IKEA chair in Marja and Harry’s dreamy backyard instantly reminds me of summer days spent with my grandma (aka happiness). If and when I ever move out of Manhattan and actually have a yard, I’ll be ordering either of these options.
