IKEA Quietly Released a New Design of Its Popular Storage System Made of Solid Wood

Finding furniture that suits your exact needs tends to get easier when you’re shopping somewhere that offers products in multiple sizes, colors, styles, and price points. IKEA (and its TROFAST series of shelves with storage cubbies) is a perfect example of this helpful variety. The store has been making different versions of the TROFAST since the ’90s, including several updates in January, and now there’s yet another set to choose from — and it’s sure to appeal to fans of the natural wood aesthetic.

The newest addition to the IKEA TROFAST system line is one of the larger TROFAST options, measuring 36 and 5/8 inches wide, 17 and 3/8 inches deep, and 35 and 7/8 inches tall. It’s made of solid stained pine wood and consists of a 3×3 grid of shelves with dark metal mesh baskets, which slide out on either side and can be completely removed. The design looks sleek and lets you see what’s in each box, but the dark color and fine texture still gives you some privacy.

At $257.99, this set of shelves is a bit pricier than other TROFAST varieties, but it’s one of the biggest and is made from solid pine instead of particle board. While you can obviously use this storage system wherever it fits, IKEA’s site suggests putting this set of shelves in a hallway or kids’ room, since it offers a lot of storage and can also serve as a room divider, especially if you get two of them. 

This particular edition of the IKEA TROFAST storage system has a lot to offer. In addition to the practicality of the shelves and removable baskets, the bare wood design has a rustic minimalism to it and provides a nice contrast to the metallic mesh. And if you have an artistic streak or enjoy DIY projects, you could always experiment with customizing the wooden exterior with decals, stencils, or a coat of paint.

If this particular combination of baskets and shelving isn’t exactly your vibe, there are many other options to choose from. If you like this size, there’s a white exterior and opaque blue and green boxes or one with the same natural wood and white boxes. If you like the mesh boxes but are short on space, there’s a smaller version with just three mesh baskets that are also a cool blue. For the more indecisive types, there’s also an option with three different heights, six storage cubes, and two sizes of basket in five different colors.
