I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

One of the features that Lawrence Leung and Mei Bruns love most about their 1930s Brooklyn apartment is the sprawling 12-foot ceilings. However, while the two-bedroom rental home comes with 850 square feet of space and ample storage, the ceiling height can sometimes make it tricky to reach, especially in the primary bedroom.

“A big challenge for us was finding a discreet way to cover up and hide the storage space in our bedroom,” Lawrence said at the time of the tour. “Since the storage space is above our closet, we rarely get to use it since it is only accessible with a ladder. We have 12-foot-high ceilings, so covering it up wasn’t easy.”

Since they’re renting, it was important not to make any permanent changes — we renters are serious about getting that security deposit back, after all. It was also their goal to take a negative (their storage being above their closet) and turn it into a positive (accentuate their tall ceilings).

A Ceiling Curtain Track Hides Clutter and Accentuates Height

The couple purchased a curtain track from IKEA and used a handsaw to cut it and adjust it to fit the length of their closet and storage space. Next, they sourced a pair of pleated linen drapes from Amazon (similar to this option!) that fell all the way to the floor.

It cost Lawrence and Mei around $120 to complete this project, but it was a minimal effort with a huge reward. “Overall, it was simple to install and effective in highlighting our tall ceilings,” Lawrence says. The soft texture adds a sense of tranquility to the room, and I’d never have guessed that there was so much storage behind the curtain.
