There are plenty of designers sharing their work and homes on Instagram, but Brady Tolbert’s earthy-yet-modern approach always makes me stop my scroll. Last year, he shared a bedroom makeover featuring a direct-to-consumer furniture brand I had never heard of before, Thuma, and it left such an impression on me that I remembered it months later. 

In the seconds-long room refresh, he assembled a new Thuma bed effortlessly, and adorned the rest of the room in an updated mid-century design. And while I loved the finished look, I couldn’t believe how simple it seemed to put together the bed. So recently, I asked him what he thought of it. “Never in my life have I been able to put a large-scale piece of furniture together in just a few minutes,” he said. “And the best part is that it requires zero tools and can be disassembled just as easily, in case you need to move it later down the road.”

Building bedroom furniture always poses some sort of a challenge, even for those who know their way around an instruction manual. Then there’s the other factor of ensuring that it all looks and feels inviting — especially at the end of a long day. Thuma appears to have achieved a balance between headache-free assembly and enduring style, making it a worthwhile contender if you’re shopping around. Thuma is a direct-to-consumer furniture company that started five years ago in San Francisco, California, and the premise for the problem it tries to solve is simple: People suck at getting valuable sleep. It’s no secret that Zs are a vital component to good health, but it’s often a detail that doesn’t get the care it deserves — probably because we all tell ourselves that dozing off happens eventually. This means that old, creaky, and generally uncomfortable beds can stick around far past their prime. And while these sleep supporters aren’t terrible, they also don’t lead to enough rest or recuperation. 

“For the most-used piece of furniture in our lives, we thought it was time for something better,” Thuma writes on its site. “So we set out to solve all of the most intimately felt problems in the bedroom, starting with The Bed itself.”

The Bed is the brand’s signature item, although Thuma has expanded to finishing touches for the bedroom like a mattress and headboard, plus smaller items like bedside tables and dressers. The Bed is made from “upcycled and repurposed” rubberwood on a mid-century-style platform, and can be personalized with a selection between a walnut, espresso, gray, and natural finish. 

The Thuma Bed does not come with a mattress, but the company does sell two options separately: the Classic and the Hybrid. The Classic mattress is made with memory foam and organic latex for medium-firm support, while the Hybrid has a pocketed coil base that makes it entirely firm. Both are handmade in America from sustainable materials. 

Unfortunately, no, Thuma does not have a storefront or showroom where you can see and touch its furniture up close. The lack of a physical store is part of its DTC model and one of the reasons why pieces cost less than you’d expect.

Thuma offers delivery, but not assembly. The brand offers shipping and delivery throughout the United States and Canada, with one exception of Quebec. Shipping within the contiguous U.S. is $95, while shipping costs for Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii are calculated at checkout. As far as international shipping, you can forward your Thuma order to a freight carrier within the contiguous U.S. 

Yes, Thuma’s furniture is designed with easy assembly in mind and utilizes a Japanese joinery technique to keep metal hardware and a need for tools to a minimum. The easy assembly is one of the brand’s hallmarks, although if you need it, there are step-by-step instructions online in addition to the booklets included in your furniture delivery.  

Perhaps the biggest reason why Thuma pieces may stay on a wishlist is its cost, even though many items have at least a 15-year warranty (its bedding has a one-year warranty). Yes, Thuma furniture is worth it — especially if you want to invest in the quality of your sleep. Assembly and aesthetics aside, which score high marks on their own, the reason why Thuma’s bedroom furniture should be considered “worth it” comes down to the quality of sleep. 

Thuma’s goal is to make customers see how a quality-made bed (and, ultimately a calm, peaceful bedroom) underscores the success of their nighttime routine. The hope is that this ultimately provides more energy, productivity, and peace during waking hours. Perhaps that’s a lot of pressure to put on a bed or a nightstand, but sleep is that important. Thuma understands that, which is why a purchase may be worth it to those who agree.
