T.J. Maxx and Marshalls are two spots I always hit when I’m hunting for deals on decor and furniture. In the past, I’ve shared the pieces I always shop for at each store. And I’m always curious about what designers and tastemakers are buying there, too, both online and in real life. And you know I love a good gift from T.J. Maxx or Marshalls as well; both had so many gems over the holidays. And I bet you could score something totally great at either for Valentine’s Day (and its adjacent holidays, Galentine’s and Palentine’s Days) right now.

Timing can be everything when you shop at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, though, especially if you’re looking for the best selection of goods at the lowest possible prices. That’s why before this January ends (how is it already the second to last weekend of the first month of 2026?), I wanted to remind you of my best-ever tip for shopping at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls — it’s called the “J” rule. The premise is simple: Always visit (and shop!) T.J. Maxx and Marshalls as much as you can during two of the months that start with the letter “J” — January and July.

What Is the “J Rule” for Shopping at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls?

I spent some time with the T.J. Maxx and Marshalls teams picking their brains on shopping tips, and they told me the brands do their biggest markdowns in these “J months” because of where they fall in the cycle of the year. January marks the beginning of spring merch drops, so stores like T.J. Maxx and Marshalls tend to deeply discount winter gear and holiday decor at this time to make space for new arrivals. Similarly, July marks the middle of summer and when fall inventory is on the horizon. Retailers tend to sharply reduce the prices of seasonal items not selling further at this time, too.

What does this mean for shoppers? Right now is the best time to buy things like holiday decor and winter staples like flannel sheets, faux fur blankets, and heavyweight linens. Other categories of items are definitely available, too, including lighting, furniture, and decorative accessories.

How to Read Clearance Tags at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls

A quick note on those clearance price tags you see in stores: The first markdowns at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls always bear a red clearance tag. If you spot the color yellow, that’s something that’s really going to have its price slashed, since it’ll typically be a final markdown.

Look for the yellow tags for the best clearance deals. This has been a game-changer for me in deciding when to snag something, especially if there are large quantities of an item left, and the tag is still red.

How to Take Advantage of the “J” Rule at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls

You should head to a local store to take advantage of the “J” rule right now, because it won’t be relevant again until July. And if you want to shop around the clock, you can always take a peek at the T.J. Maxx and Marshalls online clearance sections. You can shop both by price, which is a huge time-saver. (And note that the “J” rule is applicable to other brands in the T.J. Maxx family, including HomeGoods, Homesense, and Sierra Trading Post).

I also pulled some of the best “J” rule deals I could find for home decor right now. Hope something in this mix speaks to you — because the prices are right!

Vista Home Fashions Floral Placemats With Scalloped Trim, Set of 4
$20$10

Want to spring up your table during the cold months? Try these cute floral place mats. I know Apartment Therapy said scallops were out in December, but on a textile, I’d argue they’re a classic.

$10 at TJ Maxx
International Brass House Solid Zabra Marble Metal Table
$130$69

The fact that this tiny table is solid marble and only $69 is wild. I’d pull one up to a sofa or armchair in a living room for a luxe place to put a cocktail or cup of tea.

$69 at Marshalls
Large Scalloped Rattan Tray
$17$9

Again, the scallop silhouette makes total sense on a tray, especially one that’s made of rattan and in this jaunty turquoise color. I can’t wait to use this at an outdoor party or picnic.

$9 at TJ Maxx
Galt Chinoiserie Ceramic Decorative Box
$15$10

This sweet little box would be great on a nightstand for corralling jewelry. It’d also be a cute accent in a bathroom for essentially the same function.

$10 at Marshalls
Bella Lux Hand Painted Bow Bowls, 4-Pack
$20$15

Bows are still on trend, and these small bowls look so cute with their hand-painted ribbon accents. I can see using them for things like nuts, granola, or small candies. You could even use them for ice cream sundaes.

$15 at TJ Maxx
Scalloped Salad Plates, 4-Pack
$20$15

A salad plate set is a great host gift. Four plates for $15 is such a great price point for these. The shiny finish makes them look luxe, just like handmade zellige tiles.

$15 at Marshalls
Sherry Kline Luxury Velvet Fringe Feather Filled Pillow
$40$29

If the European trade shows are any indicator, fringe is having a moment in decor. This pillow manages to look modern even with its flourishes. I’d try it on an armchair or a bench.

$29 at TJ Maxx
Karma Home Two-Drawer Scalloped Front Console Table
$200$149

The color of this console is so lovely! It’d be the perfect piece in an entryway, paired with a mirror above and a coordinating rug underfoot.

$149 at TJ Maxx
Laura Ashley Printed Table Lamp With Velvet Shade
$80$59

This lamp feels straight out of an eclectic English countryside home. The gold interior of its shade makes it look way more expensive than it’s $59 price tag.
