This Crafty Austinite Just Might Out-Halloween Us All
Retro Halloween masks, handmade spooky DIYs, glitter, pom-poms, tassels and a ton of faux trees — crafter and blogger Jen Perkins doesn’t just set a few fake tombstones out on the lawn and call it a day. When it comes to Halloween decorating, every inch of her home (inside and out) is splashed with spooky decor. This is the third year in a row we’re showing off what her home looks like in October. But if you’ve seen one of her previous tours, don’t think you’ve seen everything. Jen’s home looks different every single year!

“I try to make every year slightly different. No table or mantel is ever the same.”
Jennifer Perkins, her husband Chris Boehk and their children Tallulah and Baxter share this spacious house in Austin’s Shady Hollow Neighborhood. Whether you’re a fan of Halloween or not, it’s hard not to be impressed with her dedication to Halloween. 2017 will be their ninth year going “over the top” with Halloween decor. (Though, according to Jen, they go even wilder for Christmas.)
“I like my Halloween kitschy and not too scary.”
The first time we toured her home for Halloween, the young family had only been living in the house for a year, but it was decorated with cool and kitschy things that Jen’s been collecting for a long time.
“This is a collection I have amassed over years like everything else in my home. If you want to collect vintage Halloween goodies think about buying things in the ‘off season’. If I go to a flea market in September the prices on vintage Halloween will be a lot higher than they will be in April.”
The second time we toured Jen’s home for Halloween, we asked her our most burning questions about how one goes about decorating on such a big scale. It takes months (she starts decorating in August!), there’s never really one “theme” (though doll parts might be universal through the years), and yes, she’s able to have so much Halloween decor because she has a big attic to store her supplies.
“There is no half-assed Halloween for this house. It either looks like the Great Pumpkin threw up in here or nuthin’.”
