This Luxe Sleeper Sofa Put Me to Sleep After 15 Minutes of Sitting On It
I have been on the hunt for the perfect sleeper sofa for about two years. Call it a symptom of my day job here at Apartment Therapy, but I am obnoxiously picky about furniture. I wanted a sleeper sofa that would go with my recently renovated basement, where I’m trying to create a “luxe, moody English country” vibe. I also needed it to be a comfortable bed for guests. (Was there such a product that existed? I was starting to doubt it.) Luckily, I finally found the one — the Joybird Wilder sleeper sectional.
The Wilder sleeper sectional checked off all my boxes: Gorgeous? Check. Queen-size mattress? Check. Available in a wide assortment of fabrics for me to absolutely obsess over and overthink? Check. When Joybird offered to send the Wilder sectional to test, I was obviously thrilled. I knew it would look lovely, but the big question remained: Would the Joybird sleeper sofa be comfortable enough for our houseguests (most of whom are our parents visiting grandkids)?
A Quick Look at the Joybird Wilder Sleeper Sectional
- The overall dimensions for the Joybird Wilder sleeper sectional are 123″ width x 60.5″ depth x 38″ height. This couch is on the larger side and won’t work for teeny-tiny spaces, so measure carefully beforehand!
- The sleeper sectional has a queen-size fold-out bed frame, which includes the mattress.
- The mattress is 4.5″ high, which consists of 3″ high density foam topped with 1.5″ memory foam, wrapped in a white polyester ticking.
- The Wilder sleeper sectional comes in 85 different fabrics. The fabrics come in nearly every color imaginable, and have various features like being pet-friendly or an official PANTONE color. I selected the Royale in Pantone, Mocha Mousse, which is a luxurious pinky-brown velvet.
Design Features That Stand Out
Let’s just cut to the chase here: This is a supremely beautiful sectional. If sofas could be on a dating-style app, I would immediately swipe right on the Wilder sleeper sectional. (Also can we make this happen? I’m patenting this right now.) The Royale in Pantone 17-1230, Mocha Mousse fabric that I selected is buttery-soft, cozy, and a lovely pink-ish brown that complements my space exactly the way I envisioned. I was originally going to get a white fabric, but I think that would have been too bright for the room and would have been a real gamble stain-wise with two young kids and a black dog.
The back cushions aren’t attached to the sofa frame, which is convenient for shuffling them around so they don’t get too lumpy in the future. This feature also lends itself to making the couch feel more like a gigantic bed — even when you don’t have the mattress out. In fact, the very first night we tried out the sectional, my family and I were having a movie night and I passed out in the corner of the couch within 15 minutes.
The actual couch cushions consist of two different large pieces: one on top of the sofa bed area, and the other on the chaise. (Pro tip: You can select which side of the couch the chaise will be built on, so you’ll need to think strategically about where in the room the furniture will be placed. It’s not reversible like some other couches.)
How the Joybird Wilder Sleeper Sectional Performed
I’ve had the Wilder sleeper sectional for about a month, and I can already say I’m in love with it. It’s hard to imagine the space without it now, and the friends we’ve had over have oohed and aahed over how gorgeous it is. (It is really pretty.) The fabric is still looking fresh, and has already survived an accidental ink pen stain from my husband, who was able to clean it up immediately with soap and water.
Beyond aesthetics, it’s also completely transformed the basement living space. We are very fortunate to have a basement that’s non-cavelike, but we still never felt like we could hang out in here because we had a queen bed that was right smack-dab in the middle of the room. It always felt more like a guest bedroom versus a family room. Now, since the couch has arrived, we’re watching movies in the basement, my kids want to play down there, and I’m currently even typing out this review in the space.
But the real question on my mind before the couch ever arrived was whether or not the mattress would actually be comfortable. We host out-of-town guests fairly often, and they’re mostly our parents who all have various forms of knee and/or back issues.
So, is it actually comfortable? After sleeping on it and napping on it, I would give it an enthusiastic thumbs up. The main complaint about sofa beds is the metal bar that can feel like it’s digging into your spine in the middle of the night. I felt no such thing, and woke up feeling refreshed. The trend in sofa beds these days is to skip the fold-out/metal bar entirely, but the issue is that the bed is then extremely low to the ground, which wouldn’t work for our older parents. Although I wouldn’t recommend it to be a permanent bed, I do think our parents will feel comfortable staying on it for several nights.
What we love
- The sectional is honestly stunning.
- It comes in a wide variety of fabric types and colors.
- The mattress is easy to pull out and feels comfortable.
- When in couch mode, it's large enough to fit a family of four easily.
Good to know
- The sectional is sizeable, so you'll need to measure carefully to ensure it'll fit.
- It's a larger investment at around $3,000 (depending on the fabric you select).
- The couch is deep, so you have to lean forward a bit to reach a coffee table.
Should YOU Buy the Joybird Wilder Sleeper Sectional?
If you have the space for the Joybird Wilder sleeper sectional, I would absolutely recommend it. We are lucky enough to have an extra room where this piece lives, but I wouldn’t hesitate to have this be my everyday couch that’s used for the occasional guest.
The sectional is sleek and large enough when hosting at your home. The fabric selection is so vast that it will easily fit in anyone’s home, no matter the style. Most importantly, the sectional is super comfortable when being used as a couch and as a bed.
