With so much extra time at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s no surprise that so many people are taking up new quarantine hobbies or getting back into forgotten favorites as a way to help learn new skills or enjoy a creative reprieve during such a stressful time. Katie Holmes is showing off her quarantine paintings on Instagram, and it turns out she’s been painting for around a decade.

Holmes recently shared a stunning dye on canvas creation she calls “Peony 2021,” revealing that having more free time during the pandemic has allowed her to enjoy her longtime love of painting again. In her caption, she wrote, “I have been painting for about ten years now. And definitely more during Covid. I wanted to share a piece that I am proud of and even though I believe art is much better experienced in person, I understand that we are living in a digital age for now. This piece is something that makes me feel hopeful and I hope it transcends…”

Fans were quick to gush about her work, which was rich in red and purple tones, in the comments section, of her post. She then shared three more vibrant creations, opening up about the inspiration behind one of her works in her caption.

Of “Conversations 2020,” a dye and acrylic creation on canvas, she wrote, “One of my favorite things to do in New York is walking in Central Park with people I love. I always discover parts of the park I haven’t seen before in tandem with learning new things about my loved ones. This piece is inspired by those walks and the gratitude I feel for the people and the beautiful park.”

While her artistic talents might come as a surprise to fans, it turns out she’s been giving glimpses into her artistic endeavours for quite some time. During the pandemic, she has shown off multiple pieces of artwork without crediting herself as the mastermind behind them, along with behind-the-scenes looks into her DIY tie-dye and crafting projects with her daughter, Suri Cruise.

And yes, because Holmes is a longtime tabloid staple, she has been spotted on multiple occasions wearing paint-splattered pants on the streets of New York City, where she lives. She even serves as a global ambassador for Artolution, a community-based public art organization that “seeks to ignite positive social change through collaborative art making.” Before the pandemic, she was also frequently spotted enjoying the many galleries and museums NYC has to offer, so it’s clear her love of the arts runs deep.
