We’ve seen several modern farmhouses here on Apartment Therapy. The best of the genre riffs on the traditional vernacular, and so too does this house outside of Burlington, Vermont. Keith Wagner, sculptor and landscape architect, took the landscape as his inspiration and built a house that lives peacefully with its rural surroundings rather than overpowers.

The home’s long exterior is reminiscent of a barn or dairy, with several small outbuildings acting as studios and work areas. Industrial metal sculptures dot the lawn and bring to mind round bales of rolled hay. The inside of the home is wide open space, made largely of concrete and glass. Twin garage doors straddle the building’s mid section. In cooler temps, they act as huge windows letting in light and views. During warmer days, they allow uninterrupted flow of air throughout the house.

Vast amounts of sunlight and uninterrupted space feel luxurious, but nothing inside is wasted. Useful minimalism is key here. Keith made the dining room table out of architectural salvage, and smaller pieces were welded in his metal workshop. The kitchen cabinets are simply tool chests on casters.
