Is this the secret to chemical-free mold cleaning? I just had a root canal, which absolutely was not much fun, but it did gave me a few hours of recouperating time during which I discovered a new-to-me show from Australia on Hulu Plus called Lush House. During the course of watching a few episodes, I learned that getting rid of mold might be easier and greener than I knew.

The host of the show (and one of my new housekeeping heroes – she’s so calm and helpful!), Shannon Lush, swears by a simple mixture of a 1/4 teaspoon of clove oil (don’t use more – its very powerful) to 1 liter of water as a mold killer and remover.

She recommends spraying the mixture on the mold and leaving overnight. The clove oil actually kills the spores rather than just “turning them white” which is what Lush claims bleach does in this situation.

The next day, clean the area with a basic baking soda and white vinegar combo and you are done – the area should be clean and mold-free.  This same mixture can be used on a regular basis to inhibit future growth, as well.

Note: Mold can be very dangerous, especially “black mold”. If you think you may have this more serious situation at your home, consulting a professional is recommended.
