Name: Nikki Darling, my three cats and dog!
Location: Highland Park — Los Angeles, California
Size: 450 square feet
Years lived in: 10 years, renting

I moved into my home in 2008 to attend Cal Arts. I had lived in New York previously since 2002 where I went to undergrad and stayed afterward. I lived in a punk dump with a rotating list of roommates and pets. I wanted to live alone in my own home. I found this back house with a yard in my budget and haven’t left since.

It recently underwent a big refurbish. I painted, got new rugs, and redid my office. I live with my three cats Fats Domino, King Tut, Marlowe Cat, and my dog Raspberry Beret. The greatest compliment I’ve ever received was, “If you hadn’t told me animals lived here I would have never known.” I keep it tidy and clean.

I’m a writer and artist and my debut novel, “Fade Into You,” comes out this November on Feminist Press.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? A 1940s meditation bench with a gorg floral cushion at the PCC swapmeet [Pasadena City College Flea Market]. Each of my animals loves it. It’s the most popular seat in the house.

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? The 1980s plastic laminate floors. I detest them. My ancient ’70s shower, which no matter how much I scrub still looks like a band-aid from the Civil War. My living room has wood floors, thank goddess.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Take your time, collect what you love, display your heart on your sleeve, and plants plants plants! Embrace natural light.

Thanks, Nikki!
