You don’t realize just how expensive basic home essentials are until you have to furnish an entire apartment. A decent sofa can easily set you back more than $1,000, and even something as simple as a kitchen trash can might require saving up before you spend. On the flip side, shelving is usually pretty affordable. While there are certainly pricier options on the market, there are also stylish solutions where you don’t have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a storage solution that holds all of your mementos (and fits your aesthetic). Bonus: A great shelf is bound to be one of the most useful items in your apartment.

One of our favorite destinations for budget-friendly organizers is, unsurprisingly, Walmart. There, we found the Mainstays 6-cube organizer, which shoppers are using in pretty much every room of their homes. The best part? It’s only $35! And, it bears a striking resemblance to the pared-back furniture of a certain well-known Scandi retailer. Really, we can’t think of a reason not to shop it.

What is the Mainstays 6-Cube Organizer?

As far as home organizers go, it doesn’t get any simpler than this small-space-friendly shelf. It comes in four neutral finishes, so you can match it to the rest of your furniture, and boasts six 11″ x 11″ x 11″ storage compartments. You can place decor and other items directly on these shelves or you can pick up some bins and turn them into cubbies. The latter is an excellent choice if you want to conceal kids’ toys, crafting supplies, or other items that might otherwise make your space look untidy. There’s no limit to the type of objects you can either display or store away on the 6-cube organizer, which is what makes it such a great pick for any room. Keep it in your office for desk supplies or place it in the closet for shoes and other accessories. This is about as versatile as storage gets and, as we mentioned earlier, the shelf looks like something you could find at IKEA — but for less than half the price.

What Walmart Reviewers Are Saying

Average Rating: 4.4/5

“This is the fourth of this size I’ve purchased… Makes it super easy to sort toys for my boys. I also like how short it is when it’s on its side. We don’t have to worry about the organizer tipping over as my boys are playing. Really like the quality for the price, and it’s easy to build.” — Char

“I got these because no matter when I try and order, the white bookshelves are always out of stock, and of course IKEA doesn’t ship. They’re pretty sturdy, easy to assemble, and look super cute for my books.” — Deanna

“Easy assembly and a great quick fix to my closet organization problem! I have it lying on its side to go under my clothes for my shoes and purses, and it works great!” — Kayla

Other reviewers wrote about using their shelves as a pet food station, gym equipment storage, and even a mini tea bar. As we said, the uses for this lightweight but sturdy design are truly endless. Plus, for only $35, what do you have to lose?
