The term “color drenching” has been a popular one in Apartment Therapy’s Before and After series this year. If you’re not familiar, it means painting absolutely everything — the walls, the trim, the molding, sometimes the ceiling and floors — the same color for a dramatic look, aka absolutely saturating the room in color. As DIYer Ali Bryde (@mustardseedbeginnings) puts it, “Paint is a powerful tool.”

Ali chose just one shade of paint to dramatically improve her “very orange” half-bath. What she liked about the bathroom in its previous state? Its tall ceilings and its chunky trim. What she didn’t like? Its old paint color, which was a sharp orange. “I felt like the molding detail was lost with the bright orange walls,” she says.

Head-to-toe mauve paint added major drama.

Ali prepped the bathroom by sanding the trim, and then she gave the room a head-to-toe coat in a moody mauve, Benjamin Moore’s Bourbon Street. “I chose to saturate the color everywhere — including the ceiling,” Ali says, adding that she “absolutely adores” the final look. “It was such a simple yet impactful change with only paint,” she says.

Her DIY advice, which she wrote on Instagram, is that paint is the biggest difference maker if you have limited funds and have to choose what to prioritize. “There is more we are doing here, but I wanted to start with the most impactful and affordable thing first,” Ali shares on Instagram. “If you’re feeling like your home is tired, start with painting it a new color.” Her paint total for this redo was about $60, making this a super budget-friendly transformation.

Ali’s paint color advice is to not stress too much. “Trust your gut with color, but at the end of the day, paint can easily be painted over,” she says.

Ali says she still plans to add a sink skirt and possibly upgrade the lighting in this powder room, but she’s totally pleased with how much of an impact a new color made.
