Forget everything you think you know about kitchen mats because Portland, Oregon-based interior designer Max Humphrey has just launched a line of stylish standing mats in collaboration with The House of Noa, and they’re here to bring instant coolness and comfort to your cook space.

First off, what the heck is a standing mat, you may ask? Per Humphrey himself, “It’s like a rug but better because it’s squishy.” Supportive mats for standing just happen to be The House of Noa’s specialty on top of even more pretty-meets-practical patterned pieces for underfoot including play mats for little ones, yoga mats, washable rugs, and more. Now, in its biggest partnership to date, the home brand has officially expanded its Nama standing mat collection with this designer collaboration.

With Humphrey at the helm, the line includes four new limited-edition prints, all of which delightfully showcase the designer’s signature “modern Americana” aesthetic. You’ll find Cabin Stripe, a classic, almost summer camp inspired look; Arrow, a playful geometric print with a muted blue background; the navy Bandana, which features a handkerchief motif; and Plus, a griege mat decorated with green and blue plus signs (pictured just above). Except for Bandana, which only comes in 20 inch by 32 inch and 20 inch by 48 inch sizes, all are available in a handful of dimensions, from something that fits perfectly in that spot in front of the sink to a longer runner for a corridor or hallway.

These pieces definitely do more than just sit pretty. Each standing mat boasts next-level softness and easy clean up, and I actually got to try out a Cabin Stripe runner in my own home, so I can speak to both fronts. For the former, I truly always forget that the mat’s so cozy and cushiony until I walk over it, so it’s basically a comfy surprise every single time. Humphrey likens it to “standing on a cloud made out of gummy bears,” and I don’t think I could have said it better myself. They’re also liquid- and stain-resistant and wipe clean, so they’re family-friendly and high-traffic area-approved.

On that note, you can style the standing mats in just about any room. I’ve even experimented with different placements for mine, like the hallway. “They’re great in the kitchen, laundry room, at a standing desk — if it’s somewhere you stand, that’s where it’s for,” adds Humphrey. Even better, each one’s non-slip, no matter the size, so you don’t have to worry about them wiggling around.

Prices range from $79 to $359, which sounds steep, but I can’t rave about the functionality and design of these standing mats enough — The House of Noa’s really on to something here. At three-quarters of an inch thick and made from high-density foam, they’re the best accents to (literally) elevate any space, especially the kitchen. Because honestly, who couldn’t use some good looking cushioning while you’re cooking or doing the dishes? Plus, the spill-proof material means they’re really built to last — a perk you wouldn’t necessarily get with most regular rugs.
