The Genius Organizer That Finally Fixed My Water Bottle Storage Nightmare
I don’t intentionally collect insulated tumblers and water bottles (that defeats the purpose), but I do seem to accumulate them. They come in the form of press gifts, wedding party swag, thank-you presents — you know the ones I’m talking about. In my past life as a product tester, I’d also tested close to a dozen to find the best ones.
No matter how many I’ve given to family, friends, and charities (unused!), I still have a large collection of close to 20 bottles, and storing them is a major headache. I’ve tried every storage method, but nothing has worked.
When I’d stack them on their sides in my pantry cabinet, it was like playing the most annoying game of dominoes — you’d go to pull one out, only for all of them to start rolling to fill in the gap. I couldn’t store them standing upright either because my shelves can’t be adjusted (they’re stuck to the cabinets thanks to a bad paint job from the previous homeowner), so the bottles that fit would topple over, and I’d have to find someplace else to store the bottles that didn’t fit.
Then I found the perfect solution: the mDesign Plastic Free-Standing Stackable Bottle Storage Holder Rack.
This mDesign rack has been such a light bulb moment for my kitchen and collection of tumblers — it’s so simple in design, but so genius in its simplicity. No wonder it was a winner in our 2024 Organization Awards.
There are a few variations of the holder that can hold one, two, three, or even five bottles on each rack, and they all work the same way. The racks are endlessly stackable and modular depending on your collection and space. My cabinets can accommodate two three-bottle racks stacked together and two racks sitting side by side, so I can store a total of 12 water bottles. Even though I do have more, I figured that I could whittle down my collection, and move a few of my most often-used bottles on the counter for easier access.
The mDesign storage rack is made of clear, sturdy plastic with U-shaped slots to store bottles on their sides so they won’t roll or tumble whenever you reach for one. The slots are generously sized to accommodate bottles of many brands and sizes. For reference, I was able to fit bottles from Contigo, Takeya, Hydro Flask, Yeti, Grayl, CamelBack, Stanley, and S’well that each held up to 32 ounces in capacity. I had to put a 40-ounce CamelBack Chute and a 40-ounce Stanley Quencher in the top-most rack; the bottles are wider in diameter so they didn’t sit nicely within the slots, but instead perched on top. This wasn’t an issue since I didn’t have many large bottles anyway.
Now, I can finally grab a bottle without it comically falling, toppling over, or rolling around. I don’t intend on expanding my collection, but if I do come across more bottles, at least I have a proper storage solution for them.
