Comfortable, welcoming, and stylish, Melissa has masterfully furnished her home on a budget. Rooms that would cost others thousands cost her hundreds. How does she do it? With patience. She has, over the years, scoured the Nashville Flea Market, Goodwill, and Craigslist to make her home a unique and comfortable place to live.

Melissa’s hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana had a major mid-century boom; MCM houses and furnishings were the norm growing up. In addition, her grandmother owned Noble’s Contemporary House, a Scandinavian/Japanese store. She went to Japan once a year on buying trips.

Luckily, Melissa inherited a few wonderful pieces from her grandmother and has skillfully woven them into her décor. Alongside these inherited treasures are eclectic touches like vintage portraits found at estate sales (one is actually called Betty in a Blue Turban), chairs from the Nashville Flea Market as well as local stores, and a wonderful mix of textiles. Decorated with pops of yellow, vintage Japanese touches, fabulous chairs, and mid century paintings, the result is a home that speaks of the personality of its owner: Stylish, fun, and can work wonders with a dollar.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Mid Century Bohemian with a New Orleans twist

Inspiration: Suzanne Wade Ehrlich, Valerie Hart, Emily Henderson, Cortney and Bob Novogratz

Favorite Element: Sliding panel doors in the foyer that were found at the Nashville Flea Market. They fit the doorway to my husband’s office perfectly.

Biggest Challenge: Being patient finding the right elements to convert a pre owned home into one that reflects our personalities.

What Friends Say: They find our home unique and want to know the story behind certain pieces.

Biggest Embarrassment: Upstairs carpet

Proudest DIY: Removing carpet from staircase, framing each stair in molding, sanding down the railing and painting it black and white.

Biggest Indulgence: Installing custom moulding in foyer.

Best Advice: Stay true to what you like and have your home reflect your personality, not what trends dictate.

Dream Sources: ABC Carpet and Home, Perch on Magazine St. NOLA, Eclectic Home on Magazine St. NOLA, Marrakech, Morocco
